Itz Smart – Carbon neutral city district development Itzling – Implementing innovation and technology via co-operative process design

The goal of the project “Itz Smart” is to tie in with existing activities and to consistently develop Itzling as a residential location further. In the test and demonstration area, sustainable residential quarters with trendsetting solutions for mobility are developed in the zone of the transport axis (railway and Schillerstraße) and along the local supply axis (Itzlinger Hauptstraße). The consideration of housing and mobility with regard to the aspect of “city of short ways“ also entails a discussion of determined mixed utilisation and the development of such residential quarters.

Wastewater cycle. Cascadic recycling of wastewater and organic residue streams in buildings.

Basic research is being conducted for a sustainable cycle-oriented system for the building-integrated recycling of wastewater and food waste. This includes nutrient recovery for a sustainable circulation system (production of plant fertiliser and biochar), electricity production to meet the demand (up to 15 %) of plus-energy buildings, as well as water recovery for irrigation of the building's own or urban greenery and for summer cooling.

On the basis of the commercial building gugler with 2140 m² useable floor area existing and 3260 m² useable floor area to be built a concept for a 100% recyclable ecoeffective building had been developed.

Energy-efficient army barracks

Holistic sanitation concepts for three selected army barracks belonging to the Austrian armed forces to achieve the standard of a low-energy house. An increase in energy efficiency and corresponding models for implementation agreed with large-volume buildings with due consideration to the special conditions prevalent within the Austrian armed forces.

IEA Cities Task 2: Data for Urban Energy Planning (Working period 2025 - 2029)

Cities consume 60–80% of the globally produced energy and play a central role in the energy transition. However, they face challenges such as insufficient data, missing methodologies, and legal barriers. The project offers practical solutions, best practice examples, and tools for urban energy planning. The focus is on international knowledge exchange, improved data access and quality, as well as collaboration with multipliers and municipalities.

Formulation of a procedure for the general refurbishment of service buildings and development of guidelines to support building owners and facility-managers in each stage of the refurbishment process in order to reach an integrated ecological and energy-oriented refurbishment.
