Summary

Alternative to the utilization of producer from biomass gasification in gas engines the producer will be used in this project in a micro gas turbine. The main advantages compared with a gas engine are seen in lower emissions of CO and NOx and lower maintenance costs. A 100 kW micro gas turbine will be connected to the producer gas of an existing biomass steam blown gasifier and the suitability of this power production device shall be investigated.

The currently used gas engines show satisfying efficiencies but there are still unsolved problems related to the emissions and the comparable high maintenance costs. Furthermore, gas engines are very sensible to variations in amounts of gas and gas quality. For these properties, which seem to be very important for commercialization, advantages are expected in case of gas turbines.

To make use of these mentioned advantages of gas turbines also in decentralized applications micro gas turbines were developed and also successfully applied and operated for methane containing gases from biological conversion plants (biogas plants). In this project this promising development shall be transferred also to thermal biomass gasification.

Therefore, the aims of this project are to investigated the application of a micro gas turbine for a producer gas from biomass gasification, to identify the requirements for gas cleaning, and to evaluate the performance compared to gas engines. For this purpose the micro gas turbine has to be adapted to the properties of the producer gas and to be integrated into the steam gasification biomass power plant. Further investigations shall be focussed to the above mentioned characteristic parameters e.g. emissions, efficiencies, availabilities, and maintenance.

Finally, a techno-economic analysis shall be carried out and shall serve as basis for a fundamental comparison between the power production based on gas turbines and gas engines, in order to draw the necessary conclusions for a future market introduction.
