IEA Cities Task 2: Data for Urban Energy Planning (Working period 2025 - 2029)

Cities consume 60–80% of the globally produced energy and play a central role in the energy transition. However, they face challenges such as insufficient data, missing methodologies, and legal barriers. The project offers practical solutions, best practice examples, and tools for urban energy planning. The focus is on international knowledge exchange, improved data access and quality, as well as collaboration with multipliers and municipalities.

IRONER - Potential for innovative and sustainable recycling of steel

Within the framework of the IRONER project, open questions were identified and the necessary innovations for increased steel recycling were developed. In addition to a material flow analysis, stakeholder interviews and ecological and economic considerations, the influences of increased steel recycling on metallurgical processes and material properties of steel products were examined.

High-quality refurbishment - Designing quality standards for the refurbishment of municipal buildings

Designing quality standards for ecological refurbishment (based on E. Panzhauser's proposals, 2001); applying them to characteristic types of buildings systematically selected in diverse municipalities; the achieved results shall serve as good practice examples for future refurbishment and as basis of discussion on subsidy regulations.

Innovative technology for the treatment of municipal and industrial waste water and process waters (INNOWATEC)

Evaluation of a technology as a supporting module for process water and waste water treatment and testing in laboratory and pilot tests for specific fields of application in operational water management.

Heat in containers

Storage of industrial waste heat in latent heat storage systems (common transport containers). Use of the heat in commercial enterprises and public or private buildings with integration of conventional energy suppliers. Technical and financial feasibility study.

(BIO)-Gas fuel station in isolated network

Integration of gas processing and fuel station in isolated network into an existing biogas plant

Refurbishment of an existing villa of the "Gründerzeit" to passive house standard with passive and active solar use

The project shows in an exemplary way how buildings of the time of "Gründerzeit" could be maintained and could offer a better environmental balance including the view of the village and the traffic than a new building. As an example a villa has been converted into a multi-family house within a larger housing project.

The results of this project were to deliver the basics for chemical process engineering taking into account the requirements of sustainable development. IEA ES Task 41: Economics of Energy Storage

What is the value of energy storage and how can it be quantified? How can the benefits and value of energy storage be translated into promising business models? The Task will conduct a coordinated methodological assessment of the economic viability of energy storage (electrical, thermal, and chemical) in applications relevant to the energy system. This will be used to derive preferred conditions for energy storage configurations.
