Presentation of the effective use of innovative bioenergy technologies in the Austrian energy system of the future (BioEff)

The study shows possibilities and strategies for the effective use of innovative bioenergy technologies in Austria.

Short Description

Bioenergy technologies can make an important contribution to the energy transition and the associated climate protection. Bioenergy sources are the most important domestic renewable energy source in Austria. One advantage of bioenergy sources is that they can be stored and can therefore contribute to the resilience of renewable energy systems. Biomass also has high national availability and can therefore make a significant contribution to the Austrian energy system.

The ability of bioenergy sources to replace fossil fuels in the existing infrastructure, as well as the variety of possible end energy sources, make biomass an attractive and nationally available resource that can contribute to the decarbonization of the energy system. However, the "biomass" resource is also limited. The question therefore arises as to which innovative conversion technologies should be used in which areas (electricity - heat/cold - mobility) in order to achieve the most effective use of bioenergy in Austria.

The central goal of this study is to identify and develop options and strategies for the effective use of innovative bioenergy technologies in Austria. For this purpose, historical and current developments in bioenergy in Austria were presented and innovative bioenergy technologies to ensure the future sensible use of biomass were illustrated based on expert knowledge. Based on these explanations and the results of the expert survey, high priority research and innovation goals were identified.
