IEA EBC Annex 70: Building Energy Epidemiology: Analysis of Real Building Energy Use at Scale

Within the framework of the IEA-EBC Annex 70, causes of deviations between calculated and actual energy consumption in buildings were empirically investigated and requirements for data quality, characteristics and security were developed. Furthermore, recommendations were developed regarding the use of internationally uniform standards and methods for data collection, processing and evaluation.

Exterior and interior insulation systems containing reed as insulation material were developed. The solutions integrate insulation material, fastening and plaster (as well as optional heating for the interior insulation). A concept for the renovation of an old building using a reed insulation system was developed.

Development of agitation systems in biogas plants in order to optimize mixing-behaviour and to reduce energy demand with the help of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation

The purpose of this project is the investigation of the mixing-behaviour and performance of the agitation systems in biogas plants, and to present them through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation. This EDP-tool can model and predict the actual fluid dynamics in a closed system. Thus it may help to plan optimal reactor geometries, position and combination of agitation systems as well as to minimize the energy requirements.

RE-FORM earth - Earth Building for Building Sector Transformation

In order to promote the use of earth, the RE-FORM earth project is creating a planning basis for the construction of structures and buildings containing earth. In order to counter uncertainties regarding the health effects of earth building materials, a comprehensive program is being carried out to investigate radiation exposure and potential pollutants in earth. By erecting a temperature-controlled rammed earth wall in a test room with subsequent measurements, the aim is to determine the extent to which the material can contribute to healthy indoor air due to its moisture-regulating properties and help to balance out energy peaks.

Smart Gas Grids - Intelligent Gas Networks of the Future

The basic principles of "Smart Gas Grids" will be investigated and practical issues and deployment strategies will be studied in detail. Furthermore, together with the relevant stakeholders, a "Vision- and Strategy Paper" and a draft for a "Strategic Research Agenda" will be developed.

The project pursues the overall strategic objective "solution of the problem-inducing heat bridge". For this purpose, the thermal bridging losses should be reduced by the factor of 15 in contrast to the state of the art. Building with recycros is working out basics in order to close the cycle of materials in the building sector as well as to increase the usage of recycled materials (recycros). The existing material cycles in the building sector are going to be analysed. Furthermore, there will be a catalogue presented, covering the actual situation of which materials are used in today´s engineering and how the waste is treated. The project will be completed with a summary of results and a proposal of concrete materials and constructional systems for the building project gugler.
