IEA Bioenergy Tasks 42: Biorefining in the circular economy (Working Period 2025 - 2027)

Biorefineries are sustainable production technologies for the process-integrated manufacturing of a wide range of products, such as food, animal feed, materials, fuels, chemicals and energy from renewable resources. For the transformation of industry biorefinery technologies are making an essential contribution to the implementation of a circular economy and climate protection. The task aims to promote the commercialisation and market launch of biorefinery technologies.

Biogas technology is now widespread in many of the Task's participating countries. In addition to general knowledge sharing and highlighting best practice examples, the focus of the work in this triennium lies on the role of biogas in decarbonising industry and agriculture, biogas in the energy system and process optimisation in the area of emissions and process stability.

The aim of Task 33 is to exchange information on the production and utilization of renewable gas from biomass and waste for the production of power, heat, biofuels and biochemicals. IEA ISGAN Working Group 9: Flexibility Markets - Development and Implementation (Working Period 2023 - 2025)

ISGAN Working Group 9 focuses on flexibilities in the power system and related market mechanisms. Main work areas include the integration of trading with flexibilities (redispatch), investigation of the needs of different market participants, identification and definition of flexibilities and their characteristics, development and scaling of interoperable flexibility markets, consumer-oriented understanding of flexibilities and the avoidance of stability or security losses due to diversity loss.

IEA Bioenergy Task 34: Direct Thermochemical Liquefaction (Working Period 2024 - 2028)

Direct thermochemical liquefaction of biomass and residues enables the production of fuels, bioenergy and other green carbon products. The co-production of several products is particularly important for the economic efficiency of the overall process. This project provides technology overviews of decentralized pyrolysis plants and case studies on co-production of green gas and biochar as well as integration into bioenergy systems.

Anaerobic digestion systems are an important component in waste and wastewater management as well as in agriculture. The state of the art of the technologies and the development of the sector vary greatly internationally. The main topics of the exchange of experience in task 37 are Co-benefits of biogas in the circular economy, framework conditions for digestate utilization, monitoring of microbial cultures in biogas plants, and comparison of economic framework conditions.

IEA Bioenergy Task 33: Gasification of biogenic and waste feedstocks for a sustainable future (Working Period 2025 - 2027)

Thermal gasification will be crucial for the energy transition. Austria’s participation in the project strengthens the exchange of information and networking between stakeholders. This ensures that Austrian actors are regularly informed about gasification activities in other member countries. In the task workshops, they can also present their own research and industry projects and benefit from international knowledge sharing.

Modular and standardised passive houses in solid timber construction

Concerning to an accurate and adaptable construction of 2 to 4 storey solid timber houses with the characteristics of a passive house, a digital construction and dimension system will be developed. The system which contains standardised modular ecological detailed solutions enables an exact dimensioning and installation of passive houses by small carpentering companies.

BIGMODERN - Subprojekt 4: Planungsbegleitende Lebenszykluskostenanalyse

Schaffung technischer und organisatorischer Voraussetzungen für Bauherrn, um planungsbegleitende Lebenszykluskostenanalysen in den Standard Planungsprozess zu integrieren sowie konkrete Anwendung in den beiden Demonstrationsprojekten des Leitprojekts BIGMODERN (SP2 und SP3). Durch Veröffentlichung der wesentlichen Projektergebnisse werden konzeptive Grundlagen und LZKA-Berechnungsergebnisse für alle Stakeholder der Immobilienwirtschaft verfügbar gemacht.

smartEXT - Erweiterung der Einsatzgrenzen bewährter Passivhaustechnik

Sondierung der Einsatzmöglichkeiten von Kompaktgeräten (Komfortlüftung mit Kleinstwärmepumpe, entwickelt für Passivhäuser) in Niedrigenergiehäusern. Kompaktgeräte zur Wärmerückgewinnung, Heizung und Warmwasserbereitung decken die Grundlast, Spitzenlasten werden durch eine neuartig konzipierte Zusatzheizung mit verknüpfter intelligenter Regelung abgefangen. Damit wird eine Steigerung der energetischen Effizienz, somit verbesserte Wirtschaftlichkeit, sowie höherer Wohnkomfort bei gleichzeitiger Entlastung der Umwelt erzielt.

PhaseOut – Heat pump technologies in the renovation of existing buildings

The aim is the conception, optimization, implementation, demonstration and evaluation of innovative, minimally invasive renovation solutions (thermal renovation and heating system replacement) with heat pumps and PV in multi-storey buildings on seven identical buildings. The comprehensive comparison includes various technical solution variants based on modular and scalable building technology systems as well as multifunctional building components for the exchange of decentralized gas heating by central, semi-central and decentralized heat pump solutions.

KLIMUR: climate-resilient urban resource management for the case study of Zukunftshof and Rothneusiedl

For the concept of the Zukunftshof, an innovative urban agriculture area, development scenarios for an integrated energy and resource cycle system are to be developed using optimisation tools and parametric design studies. A roadmap consisting of technical concepts and a coordinated financing strategy will provide the basis for a demo project that demonstrates in practice how the Zukunftshof can be the starting point and basis for resource-efficient and climate-resilient urban development.
