IEA Bioenergy Tasks 42: Biorefining in the circular economy (Working Period 2025 - 2027)

Biorefineries are sustainable production technologies for the process-integrated manufacturing of a wide range of products, such as food, animal feed, materials, fuels, chemicals and energy from renewable resources. For the transformation of industry biorefinery technologies are making an essential contribution to the implementation of a circular economy and climate protection. The task aims to promote the commercialisation and market launch of biorefinery technologies.

Short Description

Objectives

The primary objective of IEA Bioenergy Task 42 - Biorefining in the Circular Economy is to advance the commercialisation and market introduction of biorefinery technologies. New processes for the use of renewable resources to produce products and energy are collected at the international task level, described in terms of implementation and current state of development, and examined and evaluated in detail in selected case studies.

National contributions to the IEA Bioenergy Task 42 work programme

  • International networking: Exchange of information on relevant issues in the field of biorefineries, in particular with regard to (i) R&D technology development and new processes, (ii) implementation of biorefinery processes and (iii) case studies – best practice.
  • Assessment of biorefineries: (i) collection and evaluation of process data, (ii) technical, economic and ecological assessment of biorefineries (TEE assessment) to quantify the added value of biorefinery processes, (iii) comparison of biorefineries with processes based on fossil raw materials.
  • Technology focus: Biorefinery & biogas: potentials and challenges in the area of expansion of biogas plants to regional multi-product biorefineries, which also enable material use of the raw material.
  • Networking of national actors: By means of events and workshops on selected topics, networking of actors from different sectors will take place in the triennium 2025-2027. This will initiate an exchange of information at the national level and improve the connection between the national stakeholder network and the international task level.

Expected results

  • Dissemination of all results and publications of Task 42
  • Organisation of national networking events to involve national stakeholder groups
  • Reports on the results of the TEE evaluation of selected biorefinery process pathways
