IEA Experts Group "R&D Priority Setting and Evaluation" (EGRD). Working period 2024 - 2026
The IEA Experts Group (EGRD) was established by the Committee on Energy Research and Technology (CERT). It examines analytical approaches to energy technologies, policies, and research and development and evaluates the benefits of RTI policies. Its results and recommendations feed into IEA analysis, and enable a broad perspective of energy technology issues.
IEA Technology Collaboration Programmes (TCPs)
Austrian experts and companies are currently active in 23 out of 39 IEA Technology Collaboration Programmes (TCPs) and one expert group.
IEA Electric Vehicle Technology Collaboration Programme (EV-TCP)
The Technology Collaboration Programme on Electric Vehicles (EV TCP) vision is that the electric drivetrain will be used as the predominant transportation mode in a sustainable transport system that is preferably powered by renewable energy and does not produce harmful emissions.
IEA PVPS Task 1: PV Analysis and Outreach
Since the start of the IEA photovoltaics program in 1993, this task has carried out analyses of worldwide photovoltaic development, from which the program's key work areas are also derived. This gives Task 1 strategic importance for the overall PVPS program. The participation of all PVPS countries in this task is mandatory to ensure high quality of data and analysis.

REal - The laboratory for Integrated Regional Renewable Energy Systems
In the REal project, a holistic, scalable and user-friendly concept was created, whereby sector-coupled, municipal energy systems with 100% renewable energy can be implemented, considering all necessary aspects from planning to operation, reducing design costs and accelerating an Austria-wide implementation.
ExTra - ExergyTrafos for heating and air conditioning through district heating
As a contribution to the reduction of CO2 emissions, the project aims at upgrading existing heating networks by adding new devices, so-called exergy trafos, to the heat-exchanging transfer stations. These are driven by district heat and provide heating and cooling, as well as a reduced return temperature, as a service.
BIMpeco - Environmentally relevant product data in collaborative BIM environments
Construction products can pose a risk to the environment and health due to their pollutant content or releases. In the BIMpeco project, workflows and data structures for digital information management of this environmentally relevant product data are developed. For this purpose, the new ISO standards ISO 23387 and ISO 19650-1 are tested and synchronized with established process flows. The project results will be made available on an open-source basis and can be integrated into any Common Data Environment (CDE) that complies with the standards mentioned. The BIMpeco project is the first to lay the foundations for product information management of environmentally relevant properties in the CDE, covering the entire lifecycle and supply chain.
MURREAL: Murtaler Reallabor - On the way to 100% renewable energy by 2040
MURREAL connects the actors of the industrial region Murtal with specialists in the field of high tech and materials with the raw material and energy sector, service providers and research and development. In this exploration for a real laboratory, synergies had been worked out and business models had been built up to consistently take the path towards 100% renewable energy and climate neutrality by 2040.
GLASGrün - Regulation of climate, energy demand and comfort in GLASS buildings through structurally integrated vertical GREEN
Development of vertical vegetation systems for summergreen shading of glass facades of food retail and commercial areas. GLASGrün generates quantitative data on energy and microclimate balance and qualitative data on user perception. The results are guidelines for scalable and transferable constructive solutions with maintenance and management plans.
GreenDeal4Real - Improving the thermal comfort in mixed-use areas through cost-effective green infrastructure
In Vienna's 22nd district, a mixed-use construction project was used as an experimental space to simulate the effects of green structures and analyse their implementation in a real planning environment. The simulations, the planning laboratory and close cooperation with the developer made it possible to take microclimatic effects into account as early as the planning stage and to optimally compensate for the negative effects of additional sealing through greening.
IEA EGRD Workshop: Technologies and innovations for the climate-neutral city
May 12–13, 2025
Vienna (Austria) and onlineDay 1: BMIMI, Radetzkystraße 2, 1030 Wien, Festsaal, Day 2: die HausWirtschaft, Bruno-Marek-Allee 5/1, 1020 Wien, NordbahnSaal
This workshop focused on how cities can achieve climate neutrality. The discussions centered on key factors for R&D policies to foster technologies and systemic innovations for sustainable and resilient urban development.

CETPartnership Annual Conference 2025 - System Transition
21. - 22. October 2025
Online
The conference will explore how CETPartnership can enhance its role in supporting this evolution—across technologies, regions, and policy frameworks.
International Sustainable Energy Conference – ISEC 2026
14. –16. April 2026
Graz
Over the three conference days, ISEC 2026 will focus on various thematic areas, such as the "Role of the Heating Sector and Energy Efficiency" in an interconnected sustainable energy system, as well as "Research and Innovation in Energy Transition, Circular Economy, and Climate-Neutral Cities".
ReKEP
ReKEP relies on reusable transport containers instead of (disposable) cardboard packaging. These should be affordable, effective and flexible to use in the CEP sector (courier, express, parcel). The logistics processes involved are examined and adjustments are proposed to achieve economic, ecological and social sustainability.
IEA AMF Task 65: Powertrain options for non-road mobile machinery (NRMM)
Hydrogen drives are considered to be particularly important for energy-intensive applications in non-road mobile machinery (NRMM) applications. This will allow gaining a climate-effective contribution for decarbonisation of large construction and agricultural machinery. Based on the automotive sector H2 regulatory framework, the task is to develop the basis for the conformity requirements for hydrogen-powered mobile machinery and to identify approval strategies for highly mobile H2 refuelling suitable for construction sites.
sustAIn4Build - AI competence for sustainable building management in climate neutral cities
The objective of the project sustAIn4Build is to increase energy efficiency and sustainability in the building sector by using artificial intelligence (AI). Industry-specific training programs support Austrian companies to develop a workflow for integrating AI technologies into their processes, enabling them to develop resource-saving, cost-effective and sustainable solutions. This strengthens their competitiveness and contributes to the achievement of European decarbonisation goals.
Fit4Klim - Fit through education for the climate
The aim of the project is to develop and test customised training courses to qualify cities and municipalities in the areas of climate change adaptation and climate protection, spatial planning, green finance, energy and mobility.
Flucco+ - Flexible user comfort in quarter-hourly CO2-neutral Positive Energy Districts (PED)
The aim of the project is to improve the planning basis for the construction and operation of energy flexible buildings in three specific areas. First the further development of existing models of thermal comfort for dynamic situations, second the quantification of future energy grid usefulness and third the holistic testing of the developed comfort and CO2 model at three potential positive energy districts (PED), taking into account the ecological assessment as well as the life cycle costs.
