Climate-neutral cities and communities
Nine Austrian cities are currently working on their FIT4UrbanMission projects. In the city portraits, they reveal which focus they want to set in terms of climate neutrality for their city and what special challenges they are facing.
The accompanying process of the FIT4UrbanMission
To face the diverse challenges of climate change together, the available and functional solutions must be made accessible to everyone. Therefore, Austria relies on a joint approach.
The way to a European climate union
The wide field of climate protection is one of the political priorities of the European Union. The aim is to limit the negative impacts of climate change and stop emitting more emissions than can be offset by 2050 - and thus to become a climate-neutral continent.
ERA-NET COFUND Smart Cities and Communities (2014 - 2019)
Smart Cities and Communities have been identified as key to achieving the energy efficiency targets for 2020 and 2050. The main objective of this ERA-NET COFUND is to stimulate successful practice and facilitate replicability within Smart Cities and Communities implementation projects and also across projects in order to achieve a technological shift in the current energy system and provide smart and integrated solutions for technology, government and society.
FIT4Urban Mission
Nine cities, Austria's pioneers, are setting out together to become climate-neutral. The Ministry of Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology (BMK) supports these nine cities in building up knowledge about climate neutrality and in improving and developing strategies for implementation measures through a targeted funding scheme.
Mission: Climate Neutral City
With the mission "Climate Neutral City", the BMK has set a focus that will enable Austrian cities and municipalities to implement the climate & energy targets. Comprehensive research activities and accompanying measures act as "enablers" to make the path towards climate neutrality visible, to develop demonstrate it.
Mission
Resource-efficient production
The Austrian Federal Government‘s strategy for research, technology and innovation (RTI) includes the statement that research and technological development will play a vital part in meeting the great social challenges of our time.
Smart Cities Network Austria
The Smart Cities Network Austria aims to strengthen this approach and supports and connects those pioneer cities with a strong commitment to smart city concept implementation and future-oriented climate change adaptation.
Working Party on End-Use Technologies (EUWP)
The International Energy Agency (IEA) Working Party on Energy End-Use Technologies, often referred to as End-Use Working Party (EUWP), has been in the advisory council for the Committee on Energy Research and Technology (CERT) in the area of end-use energy technologies since 1981. It also functions as reference for questions on end-use energy within the IEA Secretariat.

Pioneer Region for Smart Grids in Upper Austria
Worldwide a change of energy systems takes place. The increased use of renewable energy leads to a decentralization of energy supply and therefore active control systems for the energy supply systems will be necessary.

To reach the objectives of the Austrian energy- and environmental policy the extension of electric vehicle network and an increase of the share of renewable energies at the energy supply to 34 % (today 15 %) until 2020 are necessary. For the integration of electric vehicles and a higher share of renewable energies, Smart Grids will become a key element for a future energy supply.
