IEA Wind Task 52: Large-Scale Deployment of Wind Lidar (Working period 2022 - 2026)
Task 52 works towards the widespread adoption of wind LiDAR-systems and provides a strong opportunity to generate and spread knowledge and experience through global networking. Energiewerkstatt contributes to Task 52 with a comparative study of data availability of different LiDAR measurement principles under Alpine conditions and will take an organisational role in the creation of guidelines for the use of ground-based LiDAR in wind energy applications.
IEA PVPS Task 13: Reliability and Performance of Photovoltaic Systems (Working period 2022 - 2023)
IEA-PVPS Task 13 aims to provide support to market actors working to improve the operation, the reliability and the quality of photovoltaic components and systems. Operational data from PV systems in different climate zones compiled within the project will help provide the basis for estimates of the current situation regarding PV reliability and performance.
Valuable (by-)products of gasification
19. - 20. October 2022
Living Hotel Kaiser Franz Joseph, Sieveringer Straße 4, 1190 Vienna, AT
The workshop will cover topics such as CHP (combined heat and power) / GHG (greenhouse gas) / synthesis products of gasification.
IEA PVPS Task 12: Photovoltaics (PV) Sustainability Activities (working period 2024 - 2027)
Photovoltaics (PV) is a renewable energy source that is an important technology for the energy transition. For this reason, or rather despite this, it is important to consider sustainability aspects in PV as well. End-of-life solutions in particular play an important role, as a strong increase in the number of end-of-life modules is expected in the coming years. Well-functioning recycling methods, repair possibilities or reuse options are of great importance. In this project, these existing methods and capacities in Austria are being researched and published in reports and workshops.
IEA PVPS Task 13: Reliability and Performance of Photovoltaic Systems (Work Plan 2024 - 2025)
IEA PVPS Task 13 engages in focusing the international collaboration in improving the reliability of photovoltaic systems and subsystems by collecting, analyzing and disseminating information on their technical performance and durability, providing a basis for their technical assessment, and developing practical recommendations for improving their electrical and economic output in different climatic regions.
IEA Wind Task 32: Wind lidar systems for wind energy deployment (Working period 2016-2019)
Since 2012 Task 32 of IEA Wind has been concerned with the development and the multiple challenges in the application of LIDAR (light detection and ranging) applications in wind energy. The aims of this international research cooperation are the compilation of existing knowledge and experience as well as the elaboration of new conclusions through mutual exchange and global networking.
IEA IETS Task 11: Industrial Biorefineries (Working period 2022-2024)
Biorefineries producing a portfolio of biobased products or bioenergy are the backbone of the growing bioeconomy. IEA IETS Task 11 aims to minimize greenhouse gas emissions to net zero along different biorefinery pathways. Tools and methodologies for increasing energy efficiency and the use of renewable energies are to be summarized and disseminated to relevant target groups.
Energy R&D 2022: Public Expenditures in Austria
The public energy research expenditures amounted to 214.4 million euros in 2022, which is 9.6 million euros less than in the previous year.

IEA Wind Task 32: Wind LiDAR Systems für Wind Energy Deployment (Working period 2019-2021)
IEA Wind Task 32 (since 2022: Task 52) deals with the challenges of using Wind-LiDAR-Systems and provides a strong opportunity to generate new knowledge by global networking. Energiewerkstatt elaborated in this phase of Task 32 an analysis regarding data availabilities of LiDAR measurement campaigns at different sites in Austria and resumed an organisational role regarding the assessment of uncertainties of LiDAR measurements in complex terrain.
IEA Wind Task 19: Wind Energy in Cold Climates (working period 2019 - 2021)
The project deals with the challenges of wind power utilisation in icing conditions and provides a strong opportunity to generate new knowledge by global networking. Energiewerkstatt leads a subtask in the field of icefall risk and works on deriving rules of thumb for the risk assessment of the ice throw risk of turbines in operation during icing conditions.
IEA IETS Task 11: Industry-based Biorefineries Towards Sustainability (Working Period 2024-2026)
Industrial-scale biorefineries play a central role in the transition to a climate-neutral and integrated circular economy. The international IEA IETS Task 11 supports this development by investigating and evaluating technologies and concepts for reducing emissions and conserving resources.
IEA PVPS Task 1: Strategic PV Analysis and Outreach (Working period from 2025)
This task, which is mandatory for all countries participating in the IEA-PVPS program, has been producing global reports on photovoltaic development since 1993. In addition, content-related priorities are set, or new topics and tasks are developed, which are then sent to the ExCo for decision-making. This gives Task 1 strategic importance for the overall IEA PVPS program.
IEA Wind Task 54: Wind Energy in Cold Climates (Working period 2025 - 2029)
In order to achieve the expansion targets for renewable energies, generation plants will increasingly have to be erected at locations with more demanding framework conditions in the future. For wind energy, this means planning and operating turbines under icing conditions in many countries. The task examines and evaluates technological solutions in this environment and publishes procedural recommendations in the form of technical reports and guidelines.
IEA Wind Task 51: Forecasting for the weather driven energy system (Working period 2024 - 2027)
The project aims to improve forecasting accuracy for weather-dependent energy systems to enable the efficient integration of renewable energies. The focus is on physical/statistical and machine learning-based modelling of energy production from renewable energy sources, reducing uncertainties, and enhancing the communication of forecast information to the energy sector. International collaboration within the framework of the task aims to help develop standards and best practices that advance both research and practical applications.
IEA IETS Task 21: Decarbonizing industrial systems in a circular economy framework (working period 2025 - 2027)
Energy and CO2 savings through CCUS, and resource and energy efficiency through industrial symbiosis are key approaches to decarbonizing industry. The subtasks “Carbon Dioxide Capture in Industry” and “Facilitation of Industrial Symbiosis” of the IEA IETS Task 21 deal with CO2 management, legal requirements for CCUS, new value chains and associated stakeholders, technological integration in industry, tools to enable industrial symbiosis and a non-technical assessment of the status of cooperation.
