IEA Bioenergy Task 32: Biomass Combustion (Working Period 2025 - 2027)
Biomass combustion is an important technology for the provision of renewable energy worldwide. In addition to the climate-friendly supply of heat and electricity, biomass combustion offers market-ready solutions for net-negative emissions (carbon capture technologies). It therefore represents a key technology for achieving climate targets. This project aims to ensure the exchange of information on relevant topics and thus support the success of Austrian players from industry and research.
IEA Bioenergy Tasks 42: Biorefining in the circular economy (Working Period 2025 - 2027)
Biorefineries are sustainable production technologies for the process-integrated manufacturing of a wide range of products, such as food, animal feed, materials, fuels, chemicals and energy from renewable resources. For the transformation of industry biorefinery technologies are making an essential contribution to the implementation of a circular economy and climate protection. The task aims to promote the commercialisation and market launch of biorefinery technologies.

IEA Bioenergy Tasks 42: Biorefining in a Circular Economy (Working Period 2022 - 2024)
The aim of the IEA Bioenergy Task 42 is to facilitate the market introduction of environmentally friendly, socially acceptable and economical biorefineries. In addition to networking, the interaction between national and international stakeholders as well as the dissemination of the generated results via workshops, presentations, publications, etc. are important activities.
IEA Bioenergy Task 37: Energy from Biogas (Working Period 2022 - 2024)
Biogas technology is now widespread in many of the Task's participating countries. In addition to general knowledge sharing and highlighting best practice examples, the focus of the work in this triennium lies on the role of biogas in decarbonising industry and agriculture, biogas in the energy system and process optimisation in the area of emissions and process stability.
IEA Bioenergy Task 33: Gasification of Biomass and Waste (Working Period 2022 - 2024)
The aim of Task 33 is to exchange information on the production and utilization of renewable gas from biomass and waste for the production of power, heat, biofuels and biochemicals. Especially the information exchange about R&D programs, implementation and possible markets is taken into account, to remove technical and non-technical barriers.
IEA Bioenergy Task 34: Direct Thermochemical Liquefaction (Working Period 2024 - 2028)
Direct thermochemical liquefaction of biomass and residues enables the production of fuels, bioenergy and other green carbon products. The co-production of several products is particularly important for the economic efficiency of the overall process. This project provides technology overviews of decentralized pyrolysis plants and case studies on co-production of green gas and biochar as well as integration into bioenergy systems.
IEA Bioenergy Task 44: Flexibilization and System Integration (Working Period 2025 - 2027)
What are the benefits of more integrated processes and systems? How can we measure integration and what should we look for when coupling between different sectors? IEA Bioenergy Task 44 provides answers to these and similar questions, especially in relation to a circular bioeconomy and the energy transition.
IEA Bioenergy Task 37: Energy from Biogas (Working Period 2025 - 2027)
Anaerobic digestion systems are an important component in waste and wastewater management as well as in agriculture. The state of the art of the technologies and the development of the sector vary greatly internationally. The main topics of the exchange of experience in task 37 are Co-benefits of biogas in the circular economy, framework conditions for digestate utilization, monitoring of microbial cultures in biogas plants, and comparison of economic framework conditions.
IEA Bioenergy Task 33: Gasification of biogenic and waste feedstocks for a sustainable future (Working Period 2025 - 2027)
Thermal gasification will be crucial for the energy transition. Austria’s participation in the project strengthens the exchange of information and networking between stakeholders. This ensures that Austrian actors are regularly informed about gasification activities in other member countries. In the task workshops, they can also present their own research and industry projects and benefit from international knowledge sharing.
IEA Bioenergy Task 37: Energy from Biogas (Working Period 2019 - 2021)
Aim of Task 37 is to accelerate development and progress of biogas technology in the member countries. During the working period 2019-2021 the focus lies on the ecologically and economically sound implementation of biogas technology in agricultural and industrial processes.
IEA Bioenergy Task 42: Biorefining in a Circular Economy (Working Period 2019-2021)
Biorefineries can provide a wide range of products such as energy, fuels, chemicals, food, feed and materials based on renewable resources. In this project, relevant information on biorefineries regarding technologies and biobased products will be compiled at international expert level and results on an ecological and economic assessment of selected biorefineries will be provided.
