Industrial heat pumps, especially high temperature heat pumps with useful temperatures higher than 100°C, are a central element in the future energy system. In order to increase the application of high temperature heat pumps in industry, this project will provide an overview of the technological possibilities up to the procurement process of high temperature heat pumps. This should increase the understanding of the technology and its potential and reduce existing market barriers.
IEA UsersTCP: “Empowering all” Gender in policy and implementation for achieving transitions to sustainable energy
The Annex supports the design of a more efficient and inclusive energy system by integrating gender perspectives. Based on case studies and best practice examples, country-specific recommendations for inclusive energy policies will be elaborated.
Without measures, cooling demand will triple by 2050. The aim of Task 65 is to adapt existing technologies to the boundary conditions of the sunbelt, to find suitable system concepts, to evaluate them and to disseminate the advantages. In addition to system adaptations, the Austrian focus is on life cycle cost-benefit analysis and the further development of existing assessment tools.
The Power Electronic Conversion Technology Annex (PECTA) is one of 4 Annexes of the IEA 4E TCP. PECTA shall assess the efficiency benefit of the emerging WBG technology for different relevant power electronic applications and furthermore serves as an independent knowledge platform for policy makers and all kind of parties and stakeholders that are interested in WBG.
The latest developments in digitization have the potential to significantly reduce the costs of building operations. The annex is intended to improve access to low-cost, high-quality data from buildings and to support the development of data-driven energy efficiency applications and analyses. This enables the optimization of building controls in real time and offers energy efficiency data and decision support for building managers.
The aim of the Annex is to gain knowledge about the energy flexibility services that buildings and clusters of buildings may deliver to different types of energy networks. The project increases the knowledge about the barriers and motivation for the stakeholders. Their constructive involvement is a key for making building energy flexibility a value for the resilience of future energy networks.
ISGAN Annex 6 deals with the possible system-related challenges in the development of future smart grids. Austria is leading Task 4 Interaction of Transmission and Distribution Networks. The main topic in the current work program relates to flexibility topologies within transmission and distribution grids. The results and analyses will be published on the one hand in a discussion paper and in condensed form in a video. Communication and dissemination activities will be targeted and conducted to different stakeholder groups.
Industrial heat pumps enable the use of waste heat and increase the energy efficiency of industrial processes. The aim of this project was to provide comprehensive information on the successful application of industrial heat pumps and thus contribute to the further dissemination of this technology.
IEA IETS Annex 17 aims at the networking of the Austrian membrane and biorefinery research landscape as well as an intensified exchange with the international consortium from the IETS Annex XVII "Extension - Membrane processes in biorefineries". Optimised raw material utilisation in biorefineries is to be addressed by energy- and cost-efficient membrane technologies. Various emerging membrane processes are evaluated, optimized and integration concepts are developed.
IEA Wind Task 41 is engaged in enabling wind technology as an economically competitive and reliable distributed energy resource option. In order to reach this goal, extensive research collaboration is pursued and findings and results are recommended to the IEC standard review committee.
IEA-PVPS Task 13: Performance, Operation and Reliability of Photovoltaic Systems (Working period 2018 - 2021)
The IEA Task 13 develops independent, internationally valid analyses and recommendations for the operation and reliability of PV systems and their components. The continuation of the Austrian participation ensures the flow of information back to the Austrian photovoltaic industry through international cooperation and strengthens Austria as a location for innovation and production.
IEA PVPS Task 14: Solar PV in the 100% Renewable Energy Source based Power System (working period 2018 - 2022)
IEA PVPS Task 14 aims to enhance the international collaborative efforts defining the technical base for photovoltaic solar energy as a cornerstone in the future 100% renewable energy source based electric power system.
The overall objective of the project is the advancement of fuel cells in transportation applications. To ensure a comprehensive penetration of the automotive market, the focus will be laid on the cost-reduction potential of fuel cell components and systems including hydrogen storage, the hydrogen infrastructure and fuel cell vehicles in public transportation as well as fuel cell powered utility vehicles.
The focal points of this Task are: Digitization of the BIPV planning processes (BIM), creation of a multifunctional evaluation matrix (ecological, economic, energetic, architectural); harmonization (construction, electrical engineering) of the pre-normative tests of BIPV elements as well as the creation of a practice-oriented guideline for the construction industry.
Within the framework of the IEA IETS Annex 15 - Phase 3, potentials for the use of waste heat as well as technologies for its integration are collected, bundled and processed through contributions from national research activities. The aim of the project is to identify potential collaborations in an international context and to network knowledge from the individual national research activities. Newly gained knowledge is disseminated nationally, e.g. in the course of a stakeholder workshop, and integrated into ongoing research activities.
In IEA Hydrogen Task 41, the TIMES Austria model of the Austrian Energy Agency and the experiences from the showcase energy region WIVA P&G will be brought into the international cooperation of modellers.
The aim of the project is to record the current situation in the field of refrigerants with low Global Warming Potential (GWP). Within the framework of the Annex, the situation in Austria and Europe will be harmonised at international level. The focus of the national project is to survey the current situation in the field of the refrigerants used and to prepare an outlook until 2030 on the availability of components and systems for the use of new "low-GWP" refrigerants.
Automation applications for load shifting, also in the homes of end customers, will play an important role in the current transformation process of the energy system. The project “Social License to Automate” examined the question, which aspects are important for the success of these innovations and technologies, and under which circumstances end users are prepared to accept or reject energy-related automation processes.
Hybrid energy networks, i.e. the integration of electricity, heat and gas networks, can make a decisive contribution to optimizing the energy system. The IEA DHC Annex TS3 analyses the potentials and challenges of hybrid energy networks from the perspective of the district heating / cooling system. This includes the analysis of relevant technologies and synergies, an assessment of the different methodological approaches and tools, the analysis of case studies as well as the development of suitable business models and regulations.
By 2030, the number of network-connected electronic devices worldwide is expected to exceed 100 billion, resulting in significant consequences for global energy consumption. The IEA 4E Electronic Devices and Networks Annex - EDNA therefore aims to develop policy recommendations to promote the energy efficiency of network-connected devices, and make those project results available to key stakeholders such as policy makers and product developers in the form of reports, policy briefs and tools.
