IEA Bioenergy Task 39: Biofuels to Decarbonize Transport (Working period 2025)
Short Description
The overarching goal of Task 39 is to drive forward the decarbonization of the transport sector with the help of biogenic, sustainable fuels with low carbon intensity. The focus here is increasingly on the long-distance transport sector (aviation, shipping, heavy goods vehicles), which is more difficult to electrify.
In this triennium, Task 39 will deal with six substantive projects, and these will be complemented and linked by three horizontal sub-programs.
SP1 deals with conversion technologies, markets and the supply of advanced biofuels. In SP2, the topics of sustainability, certification, procurement, LCA, TEA, efficiency and policies are considered. SP 3 is dedicated to public relations and dissemination.
The thematic projects deal with topics that were perceived as important and forward-looking in the previous triennium:
- P1 - Implementation Agenda (including Emerging Markets)
- P2 - Demonstration of advanced biofuels
- P3 - Biofuels for heavy-duty transportation
- P4 - Sustainable aviation fuels
- P5 - Marine biofuels
- P6 - Synergies of biomass and electricity technologies for fuels (as an intertask project).
A technological report will be published from each of these projects and subject areas and the sub-programs will produce factsheets on common issues across the projects.
In this triennium, Austria will lead the project P2 Demonstration of Advanced Biofuels and the subprogram 2 on Sustainability.
Through a coordinated focus on technology and commercialization, sustainability, policy, markets and implementation, Task 39 will support member countries and other transport biofuels stakeholders in their efforts to develop and deploy sustainable low fossil carbon intensity biofuels in the transport sector, in particular in the decarbonization of the long-distance transport sector (Task focus on shipping, aviation and heavy transport).
The aim of the national work is to collect and analyze scientifically reliable information on the global technological and political status of biofuels, to involve Austrian stakeholders and their work in the development and thus contribute to the development of sustainable, socially and environmentally compatible biofuel systems. The Austrian delegate acts as an interface between the Austrian stakeholders and the international network.
