IEA DHC Annex TS3: Hybrid Energy Networks, District Heating and Cooling Networks in an Integrated Energy System Context Guidebook

Hybrid energy networks, i.e. the integration of electricity, heat and gas networks, can make a decisive contribution to optimizing the energy system. The IEA DHC Annex TS3 analyses the potentials and challenges of hybrid energy networks from the perspective of the district heating / cooling system. This is including the analyses of relevant technologies and synergies, an assessment of the different methodological approaches and tools, the analyses of case studies as well as the development of suitable business models and regulations.

By 2030, the number of network-connected electronic devices worldwide is expected to exceed 100 billion, resulting in significant consequences for global energy consumption. The IEA 4E Electronic Devices and Networks Annex - EDNA therefore aims to develop policy recommendations to promote the energy efficiency of network-connected devices, and make those project results available to key stakeholders such as policy makers and product developers in the form of reports, policy briefs and tools.

IEA-SHC Task 64: Solar Process Heat

The IEA SHC Task 64/IV promotes the integration of solar thermal energy into industrial heating systems through standardised concepts, simulation tools and market strategies. The focus was on the development of modular integration solutions, the combination with heat pumps and the evaluation of simulation methods. The ‘Guideline to Market’ offers strategies for market launch. The results support companies and politicians in establishing SHIP as an efficient and scalable technology.

IEA ES Task 35: Flexible Sector Coupling through Energy Storage Implementation

Task 35 of the IEA Energy Storage TCP addressed Flexible Sector Coupling (FSC) through the implementation of energy storage and examined the role of energy storage in the context of the concept of sector coupling. The demand sectors include electricity, heating/cooling and mobility. FSC was defined, examples of FSC were described and studies on the use of FSC in local and the German national energy systems were carried out.

IEA FBC Implementing Agreement Fluidized Bed Conversion (working period 2020 - 2023)

The aim of the project is to continue to further develop the internationally very well accepted participation of Austria in the information network of the IEA Fluidized Bed Conversion (FBC) Technology Collaboration Programme (TCP) to optimize fluidized bed conversion of fuels applied to clean energy production (heat and power). All stakeholders will be included on a national as well as on a global level.

In the IEA HPT Annex 55, heat pumps with integrated thermal/electrical storage systems for existing buildings that are as close to the market as possible were developed. Furthermore, measures to accelerate market development have been worked out.

IEA AFC Annex 33: Stationary Applications (Working period 2019 - 2022)

The future energy system will be strongly characterized by decentralized and renewable power generation. The use of fuel cells (FCs) can contribute to energy and environmental policy objectives. This project investigated whether a market transition from successful international demonstration plants to commercial plants is possible. The potential applications of fuel cells in the building sector and across energy communities and climate-neutral neighbourhoods were investigated.

IEA Bioenergy Task 40: Deployment of Biobased Value-Chains (Working Period 2019 - 2021)

IEA Bioenergy Task 40 traditionally focused on international trade and supply chains of biomass for bioenergy. Starting in 2018, the systems view was broadened, also to better meet Austrian requirements. The supply chain focus was maintained, but with a broader premise: The establishment of bio-based value chains for a sustainable and fair bioeconomy.

IEA 4E: Annex Electric Motor Systems. Working period 2021 - 2024

The goal of the Annex Electric Motor Systems is to raise awareness on the large savings potential in motor systems, while showing the realization method of such a path. After publishing the policy and audit guidelines for motor systems Austria leads the task „New Industrial Developments and Digitalization in Motor Systems“.

IEA HPT Annex 56: Digitalization and Internet of Things for Heat Pumps

As digitalization progresses, heat pumps are becoming part of the Internet of Things (IoT). In this project, the opportunities and challenges of IoT-capable heat pumps for the use in households, commercial enterprises and industrial applications will be investigated. The aim of the project is to provide a structured overview of IoT-enabled heat pumps.

IEA Wind Task 27: Small Wind Turbines in High Turbulence Sites (working period 2018 - 2019)

By participating in the IEA Wind Task 27, a number of goals could be achieved, including the development of a site assessment scheme for wind turbines in areas with high turbulence intensities, the further development of the IEC 61400 standard, the participation in the “Compendium of IEA Wind TCP Task 27 case studies “And the update of the “Small Wind Power Report 2018” as well as activities such as holding the event “Small Wind Power Conference” in Austria.

The international Smart Grid Action Network (ISGAN) aims to improve the understanding of Smart-Grid-technologies and to accelerate global deployment. The work in ISGAN is structured in eight standing working groups (annexes). The present project describes the Austrian contribution to Annex 1: Smart Grids Inventory and Annex 2: Smart Grids Case Studies.

IEA ISGAN Annex 5: Smart Grids International Research Facility Network (SIRFN). (Working period 2019-2021)

The Smart Grids International Research Facility Network (SIRFN) aims at improving the implementation of Smart Grids technologies by collaboration between smart grid testing facilities, test beds, and large-scale demonstrations. The focus during the working period 2019-2020 was laid on the implementation of extended interoperability tests and innovative laboratory testing methods for decentralised energy resources. By active participation, Austria’s position and leading role on the forefront of international Smart Grids development was strengthened.

ISGAN aims at enhancing the knowledge about Smart Grid Technologies and accelerating their international development. In this project, relevant findings from technical-scientific projects as well as successful approaches from national and international projects on the topic of interaction between transmission and distribution system operators were collected and analyzed.
