The project investigates possible economic, social and environmental effects of a sustainable energy policy. Within a participatory modelling process a sustainability model is used to simulate different energy scenarios (with a focus on renewable energy technologies) for Austria until 2020.

Overarching goal of IEA IETS TCP Annex 17 was to strengthen the network of the Austrian membrane and biorefinery landscape. The aim was the optimized use of lignocellulose material in biorefineries by using efficient and sustainable membrane technologies. For this purpose, emerging membrane technologies were evaluated towards applications for biomass components valorization and a guidance on integration possibilities of emerging membrane technologies was developed.

In this context, biorefineries have established themselves as an explicitly integrative, multi-functional overall concept and essential hub in the use of biomass as a raw material source for the sustainable production of various (intermediate) products (chemicals, valuable materials, energy carriers).

IEA SHC Task 52: Solar Thermal & Energy Economics in Urban Environments
IEA SHC Task 52 focused on the analysis of the future role of solar thermal heat in integrated urban energy systems. The potential of solar thermal applications to cover the low-temperature heat demand in future low-carbon energy systems was investigated against the background of the rapidly changing framework conditions in the energy sector. Best practice examples for the integration of solar thermal systems into urban energy systems were evaluated and documented.

International activities for the energy supply of the future are taking place within the framework of IEA's technology cooperation. Visualisations based on a graph database show the extensive activities of the individual technology cooperation programmes (TCPs). IEA IETS Annex 15: Industrial Excess Heat Recover (Phase 3)
Within the framework of the IEA IETS Annex 15 (Phase 3), potentials for the use of waste heat as well as technologies for its integration are collected, bundled and processed through contributions from national research activities. The contributions of the Austrian consortium included technology development and integration concepts of heat pump and energy storage systems, risk analysis in the implementation of waste heat projects, and work on operation optimization and design of hybrid energy systems.

IEA UsersTCP Empowering all: Gender in policy and implementation for achieving transitions to sustainable energy (Working period 2022-2024)
Previous work in the Task suggests that countries with higher income levels pay little attention to inclusive energy (-technology) use and its implications. Therefore, this project focuses on obtaining more data on the gender aspects of energy users through a survey, developing guidelines on inclusive technology development, and communicating the overall research results with interested stakeholders.
