Digitization in the construction and real estate industry

In the multitude of digital possibilities, it is very difficult to maintain an overview, to assess trends and potentials, and to recognize correlations. This report therefore aims to describe the current state of the art and the market assessment of promising digital technologies. Information is provided on concrete use cases, added value and challenges of the respective technologies. The analyses presented serve to assess the potential and set the strategic course for the integration of the currently most important digital technologies in the construction and real estate industry.

Economic usage of Photovoltaic electricity in buildings

The aim of this project is to optimise the direct usage of PV-electricity produced in buildings. The main question concerning the right dimensioning of the PV generator should be answered in order to achieve a high direct usage rate of produced PV electricity under economic considerations. This analysis will be carried out for various building categories. As result, a calculation method will be developed (incl. report), in order to achieve the optimal, most economic PV system for various building categories and user typologies.

Innovation & Cost efficiency: Building standards for multi family residential buildings at optimal cost (Inno-Cost)

In this project, innovative building standards were examined concerning their economical aspects through the life cycle of a building. By means of life cycle-costs for 40-50 multi family lowest energy and passive house residential buildings on actual data from the day-to-day operation, reliable data and know-how was compiled for the first time, which is to support further market penetration of innovative building standards in the field of multi family residential buildings.

IEA DHC Annex TS7: Industry-DHC Symbiosis - A systemic approach for highly integrated industrial and thermal energy systems

Renewable and excess heat sources are currently representing nearly a third of the energy supply used in the DHC sector. Excess heat has the potential to further grow to become an important part of the energy puzzle. Up to 25% of district heating could be covered by industrial excess heat and more than 10 % of the EU's total energy demand for heating and hot water could be covered by heat from data centres, metro stations, service sector buildings, and waste-water treatment plants.

Building as living lab - Buildings as a living lab for climate-neutral, needs-based and affordable housing

Within ÖWG, climate protection and sustainability are strategically anchored in renovation and densification projects. A comprehensive, climate-neutral renovation concept had been developed for a specific pilot property in Graz in an open, co-creative innovation process. The building becomes a living lab in which new solutions are tested in the everyday lives of the residents.

IEA HPT Task 41: Cold Climate Heat Pumps

The aim was to increase the efficiency of outdoor air heat pumps in cold climates in locations with low outside temperatures of up to -25°C. Newly developed heat exchanger concepts were tested and optimized regarding their icing behaviour. Different circuit modifications were modelled and simulation studies for low ambient temperatures were carried out.

P2H-Pot - Potentials, economic feasibility and system solutions for Power-to-Heat

P2H-Pot has identified economically feasible potentials for Power-to-Heat (P2H) in urban regions. The suitability of different technical system configurations were investigated using thermodynamic simulation and considering experiences from Scandinavian cases. The assessment of short, medium and long term relevance and economic feasibility of P2H were accomplished by simulating model-based scenarios up to 2050 of the Austrian and German electricity and heat market. In cooperation with a district heating company three case studies have been carried out.
