SUPROMED: Reprocessing and Reuse of Single Use Medical Devices in the Light of Sustainable Development Criteria - Implementation in Austria
In contrast to other countries there is currently no reprocessing and reuse of single use medical devices in Austria. Thus the potential for major ecological and economical savings remains unused. In a stakeholder dialogue, practical implementation strategies were developed to change the trend towards a sustainable value-added chain.

The goal of the research project is the evaluation of different heating and ventilation systems for passive- and low energy multi family and office buildings taking into account indoor climate, possible variation of user behaviour, final and primary energy demand, costs, space demand and fail save installation and operation.
InnoGOK – Investigation of the energetic and ecological usability of solar radiation on urban spaces and paths
Examination of the suitability of street space or other paved or not paved surfaces in urban areas for promoting renewable heat from solar radiation. Thus offers a high potential for increasing energy efficiency and conserving resources in urban contexts. Besides, the dissipation of heat from large solar-heated surfaces promises to prevent urban heat islands.
IEA EBC Annex 64: Optimised Performance of Energy Supply Systems with Exergy Principles (Working period 2014-2018)
To reduce CO2 emissions in cities, an overall understanding of energy conversion processes is necessary, which also takes temperature levels into account. This is particularly important when alternative heat sources such as waste heat, ambient heat, solar and geothermal energy are to be used, as these often have a low temperature level, i.e. a low exergy content. Accordingly, urban energy systems are analysed and optimised within the framework of the IEA EBC Annex 64 with the help of the exergy approach.
IEA-SHC Task 66: SOLAR ENERGY BUILDINGS - Integrated solar energy supply concepts for climate-neutral buildings and communities for the "City of the Future”
The energy supply for climate-neutral buildings is based on holistic system concepts that achieve high renewable fractions by intelligently combining technologies, sector coupling, high grid interaction and flexibilization measures. The Solar Energy Buildings Task supports exactly this development. The objective is to identify relevant stakeholders and their needs, to develop a technology portfolio and optimised integrated energy concepts and to give recommendations to policy makers and energy-related companies.
PRoBateS - Potentials of planning and building legislation for energetically sustainable city structures
The aims of this project are to analyse planning and building legislation in order to identify barriers, potentials and suitable courses of action for energy-orientated policy measures. Specific policy recommendations are developed with a view to increasing the sustainability of energy-related city structures. For these purposes the project combines two different disciplinary approaches: a thorough legal analysis and a spatial structure and quantitative impact assessment.
Stakeholder process of the initiative "Reference architecture for secure Smart Grids in Austria"
The project worked out the development of a smart grids reference architecture for Austria under involvement of all actors. Based on technological-scientific elements a process which met the requirements of stakeholders like operators of infrastructure, industry and also public agencies had been worked out to achieve nationally accepted and internationally orientated reference architecture.
ReCon: Development of a resilient hook-and-loop-fastening-system for the adaptable assembly of building components in the building industry
Systemic examination of the hook-and-loop fastener and building component interfaces for the development of a resilient fastening system between parts/components with different functions and lifespan. The desired result serves to verify the fastening system and forms a basis for further research and establishment in the building industry.
Pallets never pall - Development of the Pallet House to series-production readiness
The winning project "Pallet House" of the EU-wide competition GAU:DI in 2007 consists of 800 (used) pallets. It has been exhibited in a scale 1:1 at the Biennale in Venice 2008 and has been developed for mass production within this project. Therefore, two exemplary scenarios were developed: (temporary) construction at Vienna's Urban Lakeside in Aspern and the construction of a low-cost building in South Africa.
IEA DHC TS5 - Integration of Renewable Energy Sources into existing District Heating and Cooling Systems (RES DHC)
The expansion of sustainable district heating/cooling is an essential part of the Austrian heat transition. The transformation of these supply systems to fully renewable systems requires the combination of a multitude of aspects. The aim of the project is to compile a data and knowledge base from international projects in this context. Expertise and process know-how for the process of implementing the transformation of district heating and cooling systems will be collected and processed.
IEA DHC Annex XIII Project 02: MEMPHIS 2.0 - Advanced algorithm for spatial identification, evaluation of temporal availability and economic assessment of waste heat sources and their local representation
The identification and integration of waste heat sources is a key measure towards the decarbonisation district heating networks (DHN). Aim of MEMPHIS 2 is to develop an improved algorithm for identification of different current and future waste heat sources; including time relations of the heat emitted and techno-economic details as well as the further development of the online waste heat explorer.
IEA DHC Annex XIII Project 07: CASCADE - A comprehensive toolbox for integrating low-temperature sub-networks in existing district heating networks
The majority of urban district heating networks operate at high temperatures, which are a barrier to the efficient integration of heat sources such as solar, geothermal, ambient or low temperature waste heat. CASCADE is investigating the integration of low-temperature networks into the return pipe of existing district heating networks, which will reduce return temperatures and thus improve efficiency and increase its capacity to connect new customers.
Existing building reconstruction and implementation of passive house components
![](/includes/images/pdf-placeholder.png)
Implementation of passive house components, systems and techniques into the practice of existing building reconstruction, in order to reduce the energy consumption as much as possible and to increase the living quality substantially. Craftspeople and planners, who are specialized in building renovation, should gain access to passive house know-how.

Renovation of a semidetached house using vacuum insulation panel in area of wall, roof and terrace. The very first time the mechanical mounting systems from VIP is used for special applications in the renovation of facades.
Building as living lab - Buildings as a living lab for climate-neutral, needs-based and affordable housing
Within ÖWG, climate protection and sustainability are strategically anchored in renovation and densification projects. A comprehensive, climate-neutral renovation concept had been developed for a specific pilot property in Graz in an open, co-creative innovation process. The building becomes a living lab in which new solutions are tested in the everyday lives of the residents.
