IEA IETS Annex 17: Membrane processes in biorefineries (Working period 2020 - 2022)

IEA IETS Annex 17 aims at the networking of the Austrian membrane and biorefinery research landscape as well as an intensified exchange with the international consortium from the IETS Annex XVII "Extension - Membrane processes in biorefineries". Optimised raw material utilisation in biorefineries is to be addressed by energy- and cost-efficient membrane technologies. Various emerging membrane processes are evaluated, optimized and integration concepts are developed.

IEA Wind Task 41 is engaged in enabling wind technology as an economically competitive and reliable distributed energy resource option. In order to reach this goal, extensive research collaboration is pursued and findings and results are recommended to the IEC standard review committee.

The IEA Task 13 develops independent, internationally valid analyses and recommendations for the operation and reliability of PV systems and their components. The continuation of the Austrian participation ensures the flow of information back to the Austrian photovoltaic industry through international cooperation and strengthens Austria as a location for innovation and production.

IEA AFC Annex 34: Fuel Cells for Transportation (Working period 2019 - 2021)

The overall objective of the project is the advancement of fuel cells in transportation applications. To ensure a comprehensive penetration of the automotive market, the focus will be laid on the cost-reduction potential of fuel cell components and systems including hydrogen storage, the hydrogen infrastructure and fuel cell vehicles in public transportation as well as fuel cell powered utility vehicles.

IEA PVPS Task 15: Builiding integrated Photovoltaic (Working period 2019 - 2021)

The focal points of this Task are: Digitization of the BIPV planning processes (BIM), creation of a multifunctional evaluation matrix (ecological, economic, energetic, architectural); harmonization (construction, electrical engineering) of the pre-normative tests of BIPV elements as well as the creation of a practice-oriented guideline for the construction industry.

Within the framework of the IEA IETS Annex 15 - Phase 3, potentials for the use of waste heat as well as technologies for its integration are collected, bundled and processed through contributions from national research activities. The aim of the project is to identify potential collaborations in an international context and to network knowledge from the individual national research activities. Newly gained knowledge is disseminated nationally, e.g. in the course of a stakeholder workshop, and integrated into ongoing research activities.

IEA HPT Annex 54: Heat pump systems with low GWP refrigerants

The aim of the project is to record the current situation in the field of refrigerants with low Global Warming Potential (GWP). Within the framework of the Annex, the situation in Austria and Europe will be harmonised at international level. The focus of the national project is to survey the current situation in the field of the refrigerants used and to prepare an outlook until 2030 on the availability of components and systems for the use of new "low-GWP" refrigerants.

IEA UsersTCP: Social License to Automate

In this annex, international Demand Side Managements projects are analysed, in which customers are automatically controlled or can adapt themselves to price changes at short notice via price signals. The most important social, organizational, economic and regulatory parameters for successful customer retention in the participating countries are identified. Furthermore, it is examined how the trust of the end customers can be built and maintained.

IEA DHC Annex TS3: Hybrid Energy Networks

Hybrid energy networks, i.e. the integration of electricity, heat and gas networks, can make a decisive contribution to optimizing the energy system. The IEA DHC Annex TS3 analyses the potentials and challenges of hybrid energy networks from the perspective of the district heating / cooling system. This includes the analysis of relevant technologies and synergies, an assessment of the different methodological approaches and tools, the analysis of case studies as well as the development of suitable business models and regulations.

IEA 4E EDNA: Tasks „Policies for Connected Devices“ and “Total Energy Model for Connected Devices”

The goal is the active participation and representation of the Austrian position and interests in EDNA as well as exchange with and dissemination of results. Austria will contribute to Tasks C “Policies for Connected Devices”, and lead Task D “Total Energy Model”. In addition, Austria also participates and contributes to the “Centre of Excellence”, as well as to the project “Basket of products testing”.

The main objective of the task is to identify, verify and promote the role of SHIP systems as single system and in integrated energy systems. Technical and non-technical barriers will be tackled. The main results of the project are a dimensioning and integration guideline for SHIP and integrated energy systems and a Guideline to Market for SHIP and integrated energy systems.

IEA FBC Implementing Agreement Fluidized Bed Conversion (working period 2020 - 2022)

The aim of the project is to continue and further develop the internationally very well accepted participation of Austria in the information network of the IEA Fluidized Bed Conversion (FBC) Technology Collaboration Programme (TCP) to optimize fluidized bed conversion of fuels applied to clean energy production (heat and power). All stakeholders will be included on a national as well as on a global level.

In the IEA HPT Annex 55, heat pumps with integrated thermal/electrical storage systems for existing buildings that are as close to the market as possible will be developed. Furthermore, measures to accelerate market development will be worked out.

IEA-ISGAN Annex 2: Smart Grid Case Studies (Working period from 2019)

The aim of this Annex is to provide all ISGAN members with detailed information of the current status of pilot- and demonstration projects for Smart Grids. Different communication methods are used: Casebooks describe demonstration projects highlighting a certain focus of Smart Grids research and development. The Survey on drivers and technologies for Smart Grid projects identifies countries’ specific motivating drivers for pursuing smart grids and catalogue existing activities. Knowledge Transfer Projects (KTPs). allow for an interactive dialogue with ISGAN members as well as interested stakeholders via workshops.

Analyzes are planned on the technological and economic requirements of high-quality bioenergy sources, biomass resources and advanced logistics chains, sustainable biomass production and trade, stimulating trade and investment in trade and related market studies.

As digitalization progresses, heat pumps are becoming part of the Internet of Things (IoT). In this project, the opportunities and challenges of IoT-capable heat pumps for the use in households, commercial enterprises and industrial applications will be investigated and made available to the relevant target groups in the form of guidelines, data and information relevant to standards.
