IEA Bioenergy Task 32: Biomass Combustion (Working Period 2025 - 2027)
Short Description
The main objective of IEA Bioenergy Task 32 is the dissemination and expansion of sustainable energy supply solutions based on the combustion of biomass.
For many years, the Task 32 working groups in IEA Bioenergy have been working intensively on the energetic use of biomass for the centralised and decentralised provision of heat and electricity. In view of the major challenges in transforming the energy supply for industry and the emerging need for carbon sinks to achieve the global climate targets, Task 32 is setting additional priorities in these areas in the triennium 2025 - 2027. The work programme specifically covers the following topics:
- Sustainable heating in residential buildings
- Hybrid bioenergy heating systems
- Decarbonisation of industrial process heat with efficient and flexible bioenergy solutions
- Biomass combustion with carbon capture solutions and biochar production
In the course of working on these work packages, studies and reports will be prepared, events organised and databases established and expanded. Austria will take on the role of co-task leader from 2025 to 2027 and will be heavily involved in the planning, coordination and processing of the task's activities.
The aim of the national work is to ensure the exchange of information between the numerous Austrian stakeholders and the international network. In this way, international developments are to be disseminated in Austria in an efficient and targeted manner and, in turn, innovations from Austria are to be publicised internationally. In addition to the technological innovations of Austrian companies, new research results from the relevant research institutions are also explicitly presented here, thereby raising their profile and, as a result, often expanding their international network. For Austrian companies, this work provides important support in the internationalisation of their markets, while for research institutions it offers the opportunity to gain new cooperation partners from science and research.
The following Austrian project objectives and measures contribute to this:
- Regular personal exchange with industry representatives
- Organisation and implementation of a national workshop on the topic of BECCUS
- Organisation and implementation of international task workshops and webinars with Austrian participation
- Coordination of two task studies and participation in several task projects to contribute Austrian information
- Country reports at task meetings on the status and current developments in Austria
- Semi-annual contributions to the national IEA Bioenergy Newsletter
