IEA AMF Task EATS: Exhaust gas aftertreatment systems (working period 2024 - 2025)
Internal combustion engines with renewable fuels are indispensable for the decarbonization of the hard-to-electrify industrial and transport sectors. The AMF TCP EATS Task is investigating effective exhaust aftertreatment technologies to achieve air quality comparable to electrified applications. Emissions are being analysed, suitable measurement methods identified and guidelines for limiting emissions developed.
IEA ISGAN Working Group 9: Flexibility Markets - Development and Implementation (Working Period 2023 - 2025)

The focus lies on distribution network planning principles, the systematic classification of flexibility mechanisms, and capacity mechanisms. The results support well-informed decision-making for a resilient, efficient, and secure energy system.
IEA AMT Task 12: Novel 2D materials and laser-based surface processes to increase resource efficiency in mobility applications
Friction and wear cause enormous global costs and CO2 emissions. At the same time, machines should become more and more reliable. Within Task 12, new concepts in material development and surface processes were examined and advanced in order to reduce friction and wear.
IEA ISGAN Communication Working Group (Working period 2023 - 2025)
The ISGAN Communications Working Group prepares results, best practices, and insights from the TCP ISGAN in various communication formats. This includes interactive workshops with internal and external stakeholders, webinars, and policy papers presented at the Clean Energy Ministerials. In addition, the ISGAN Knowledge Tool was developed, which will be further enhanced in the follow-up project.
IEA HEV TCP Task 40: Critical Raw Materials for Electric Vehicles
The production of electric vehicles and batteries requires critical raw materials. In Task 40, demand and supply are compared, based on global scenarios of the development of electric vehicle fleets, battery technologies, primary and secondary raw material potentials and recycling technologies. Potential overall ecological and social impacts of raw material and battery production are assessed.
IEA IETS Task 11: Industrial Biorefineries (Working period 2022-2024)
Biorefineries producing a portfolio of biobased products or bioenergy are the backbone of the growing bioeconomy. IEA IETS Task 11 aims to minimize greenhouse gas emissions to net zero along different biorefinery pathways. Tools and methodologies for increasing energy efficiency and the use of renewable energies are to be summarized and disseminated to relevant target groups.
IEA UsersTCP Empowering all: Gender in policy and implementation for achieving transitions to sustainable energy (Working period 2022-2024)
Previous work in the Task suggests that countries with higher income levels pay little attention to inclusive energy (-technology) use and its implications. Therefore, this project focused on obtaining more data on the gender aspects of energy users through a survey, developing guidelines on inclusive technology development, and communicating the overall research results with interested stakeholders.
IEA TCP AFC Annex 33: Fuel Cells for Stationary Applications (Working period 2022 - 2024)
The development of the energy system is characterized in particular by increasing decentralized power generation from renewable energy sources. Hydrogen is a key energy source for the decarbonization of buildings, mobility and industry. In 2022, Austria took on a sub-task in the IEA AFC TCP, which is investigating the use of stationary fuel cells in climate-neutral neighbourhoods. The project analyses its success factors and limitations and tests modelling tools.

Energy and CO2 savings through circular economy, especially directly through carbon circularity (CCU), and resource and energy efficiency through industrial symbiosis are two key approaches to decarbonizing industry.
IEA ES Task 36: Carnot Batteries
Carnot Batteries are an emerging technology for the inexpensive and site-independent storage of electric energy at medium to large scale (> 1.000 MWh). The technology transforms electricity into thermal energy, stores it in inexpensive media such as water or molten salt and transforms the thermal energy back to electricity as required. Carnot Batteries have the potential to solve the global storage problem of renewable electricity in a more economic and ecologic way than conventional batteries.
IEA HPT Annex 61: Heat Pumps in Positive Energy Districts
IEA HPT Annex 61 evaluated the role of heat pumps (HP) in positive energy districts (PED). Efficiency potentials of the electric and thermal energy of districts that can be unlocked with the use of HPs were evaluated in order to reach a positive energy balance. This referred to both, upgrade of waste heat and simultaneous generation of different energy use in buildings (space heating, DHW, space cooling/dehumidification) and included self-consumption of on-site renewable electricity generation.
IEA Experts Group "R&D Priority Setting and Evaluation" (EGRD) - Working period 2017 - 2019
The IEA Experts Group (EGRD) was established by the Committee on Energy Research and Technology (CERT). It examines analytical approaches to energy technologies, policies, and research and development and evaluates the benefits of RTI policies. Its results and recommendations feed into IEA analysis, and enable a broad perspective of energy technology issues.
IEA 4E: Annex Electric Motor Systems. Working period 2019 - 2021
The goal of the Annex Electric Motor Systems is to raise awareness on the large savings potential in motor systems, while showing the realization method of such a path. After publishing the policy and audit guidelines for motor systems Austria leads the task „New Industrial Developments and Digitalization in Motor Systems“.
IEA Bioenergy Task 39: Biofuels to Decarbonize Transport (Working period 2022 - 2024)
The long-term goal of Task 39 is to drive decarbonisation in the transport sector using biogenic, sustainable, low-carbon fuels. This includes conventional and advanced biofuels that can be produced via different technological routes (oleochemical, biochemical, thermochemical and hybrid). In the 2022-2024 triennium, the focus was increasingly on long-haul transport, which is more difficult to electrify.
IEA DHC TS5 - Integration of Renewable Energy Sources into existing District Heating and Cooling Systems
District heating and cooling offers an efficient and flexible, organizational and technical solution for the energy transition in the heating and cooling sector. It provides a broad platform and a major lever for the integration of all kinds of renewable energy sources. The research of Annex TS5 has investigated and evaluated the state-of-the-art and best practices at international level for introducing RES into existing large urban DHC systems and thus transforming and decarbonizing their heat supply.
IEA EBC Annex 84: Demand Management of Buildings in Thermal Networks
IEA EBC Annex 84 aims to collect knowledge for enabling demand side management in buildings connected to DHC networks with a strong focus on case studies, technology integration, algorithms as well as collaboration models between DHC operators and consumers.
IEA ISGAN Working Group 9: Flexibility Markets - Development and Implementation (Working Period 2021 - 2023)
ISGAN Working Group 9 focuses on flexibilities in the power system and related market mechanisms. Main work areas include the integration of trading with flexibilities (redispatch), investigation of the needs of different market participants, identification and definition of flexibilities and their characteristics, development and scaling of interoperable flexibility markets, consumer-oriented understanding of flexibilities and the avoidance of stability or security losses due to diversity loss.
IEA Bioenergy Tasks 42: Biorefining in a Circular Economy (Working Period 2022 - 2024)
The aim of the IEA Bioenergy Task 42 is to facilitate the market introduction of environmentally friendly, socially acceptable and economical biorefineries. In addition to networking, the interaction between national and international stakeholders as well as the dissemination of the generated results via workshops, presentations, publications, etc. are important activities.
IEA Bioenergy Task 44: Flexible Bioenergy and System Integration (Working Period 2022 - 2024)
IEA Bioenergy Task 44 contributes to the development and analysis of flexible bioenergy solutions as a contribution to a low-carbon energy system. The aim is to improve the understanding of the possibilities and their potential as well as the status of flexible bioenergy and to identify obstacles and future development needs in the context of the entire energy system (electricity, heat and transport).
IEA AFC Annex 34: Fuel Cells for Transportation (Working period 2022 - 2025)
The vision of the AFC TCP is to make a significant contribution to addressing the opportunities and barriers to the commercialisation of fuel cells by promoting the development of fuel cell technologies and their applications at the international level. In detail, Annex 34 deals with the advantages and disadvantages of fuel cells, the further development of storage media, the recording of cost reduction potentials and the results analysis of pilot projects for mobile applications.
