IEA-IETS Annex 15: Industrial Excess Heat Recover (Phase 2)
In the framework of IEA IETS Annex 15 potentials of excess heat and technologies for their integration were collected from national research projects, bundled and elaborated on. This way, a broad knowledge base was built on experience gained in carrying out surveys for potential use of excess heat. Experiences with questionnaires, process integration tools and extrapolation of data using existing knowledge about the respective energy systems were exchanged. A process database with detailed process information could also be established, which can be used for further research activities. Also, in the area of policy instruments, recommendations for future measures to increase the use of surplus heat were derived on the basis of national contributions.
IEA Bioenergy Task 37: Energy from Biogas and Landfill Gas (Working Period 2013 - 2015)
The Austrian representatives participated in the expert group „IEA Bioenergy Task 37 – Energy from Biogas“ for the period 2013-2015. Their main tasks was the work on the technical brochures on biogas plant monitoring, digestate processing and the evaluation of pretreatment technologies. In addition, they participated in the knowledge exchange of the participating countries.
IEA EBC Annex 56 – Cost Effective Energy and Carbon Emission Optimization in Building Renovation
The objective of the IEA EBC Annex 56 project was to develop a methodology for cost effective energy and carbon emissions optimization in building renovation. Within the frame of the project this methodology was developed and furthermore also innovative renovation projects were collected and analyzed, which should perform as best practice examples.
IEA EBC Annex 57: Evaluation of the design-specific CO2 emissions and the gray energy
The IEA-EBC Annex 57 evaluated methods of construction-related embodied environmental impacts and embodied energy and related international best practice projects and their approaches. Based on these findings, methodological guidelines as well as measures for their application at the international level and for the planning of buildings - with lower embodied energy and embodied greenhouse gas emissions - were derived.
IEA Bioenergy Task 40: Sustainable Bioenergy Markets and International Trade: Securing Supply and Demand
Austrian participation in the IEA Bioenergy Task 40 consortium in the triennium 2016-2018: There was an intensive networking through contributions and scientific work in task meetings and workshops, in subtasks and in intertask projects on the topic "international bioenergy trade ". Lessons learned have been disseminated internationally and nationally and are available for free download in English.
IEA HPP Annex 47: Heat Pumps in District Heating and Cooling Systems
A significant use of alternative heat sources with the help of district heating and cooling networks is a major challenge for a sustainable energy supply. In times of increasing shares of fluctuating producers such as PV and wind energy, the relevance of heat pumps increases. Within the framework of the IEA HPT Annex 47, potentials and barriers for the integration of heat pumps in DHC networks were analyzed.
IEA SHC Task 54: Price reduction
IEA SHC Task 54 was an interdisciplinary, collaborative project with the main focus on significant price reductions of solar thermal systems. Measures to achieve a reduction of the customer price up to 40% included simplified system designs, standardized components and cost-efficient materials and production and installation processes.
IEA EBC Annex 67: Energy Flexible Buildings (working period 2015 - 2019)
The project increased the knowledge on building Energy Flexibility and the regarding potential buildings can provide to energy grids. The critical aspects and possible solutions to utilize the Energy Flexibility that buildings can provide were identified and a report of the “Principles of Energy Flexible Buildings” will be published in 2019.
IEA HPT Annex 50: Heat Pumps in Multi-Family Buildings for Space Heating and DHW
The project aims at demonstrating the potentials of heat pump technology for the energy supply of multi-family houses (MFH) and to contribute to the elimination of existing market barriers. Concepts and innovative technology options for heat pumps in MFH will be investigated in detail by means of simulations and experiments. The findings and results will be presented in international expert meetings and disseminated among national heat pump manufacturers, installers and planners.
IEA PVPS Task 1: Strategic PV Analysis & Outreach (Working period until 2022)
This task, which is mandatory for all countries participating in the IEA-PVPS program, has been producing global reports on photovoltaic development since 1993. In addition, content-related priorities are set, or new topics and tasks are developed, which are then sent to the ExCo for decision-making. This gives Task 1 strategic importance for the overall IEA PVPS program.
IEA PVPS Task 15: Acceleration of BIPV
Building integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) is one of the future markets for Photovoltaics which enables the combination of architecture and energy technology. The project focussed on further national research in the area of BIPV, which is to be raised to an international level.
IEA Wind Task 19: Wind Energy in Cold Climates (working period 2016 - 2018)
IEA Wind Task 19 deals with the challenges of the utilisation of wind energy in Cold Climates (i.e. under icing-conditions) and offers through global networking and mutual exchange of experience, the possibility of collecting and generating additional know-how. Aim of the subtask was to share experiences with international partners and standardising of icefall risk assessments. In addition, an evaluation report on the functionality of the new Vestas rotor blade heating system was published.
IEA Bioenergy Task 37: Energy from Biogas (Working Period 2016 - 2018)
Participation as Austrian representative in the expert group during the period 2016-2018 in order to achieve knowledge-exchange, establishment of technical reports and recommendations, as well as dissemination of the gained information to Austrian stakeholders.

Austrian participation in Task 32 "Biomass Combustion and Cofiring" in the working period 2016-2018 and active participation in the defined Task main objectives, events and projects which are of relevance for Austria. International and national dissemination and networking activities for information exchange and for the initiation of cooperation.
IEA-Bioenergy Task 42: Biorefining in a Circular Economy (Working Period 2016 - 2018)
The task deals with the analysis and dissemination of relevant information concerning biorefineries. In the last period the focus was on the development of an open-access tool for the TEE-evaluation (Technical/Economic/Environmental Assessment) of biorefineries.
IEA Wind Task 32: Wind lidar systems for wind energy deployment (Working period 2016-2019)
Since 2012 Task 32 of IEA Wind has been concerned with the development and the multiple challenges in the application of LIDAR (light detection and ranging) applications in wind energy. The aims of this international research cooperation are the compilation of existing knowledge and experience as well as the elaboration of new conclusions through mutual exchange and global networking.
IEA PVPS Task 12: PV Environmental Health And Safety (working period 2016-2018)
The aim of IEA PVPS Task 12 is to foster international collaboration in the area of photovoltaics and environment. That includes compiling and disseminating accurate Information on environment, health, safety, and other aspects of sustainability associated with the life-cycle of photovoltaics. The austrian contribution addresses LCA, implementation of sustainability aspects and dissemination.
IEA ISGAN Annex 5: Smart Grids International Research Facility Network (SIRFN). (Working period 2013-2018)
The Smart Grids International Research Facility Network (SIRFN) aims at improving the implementation of Smart Grids technologies by collaboration between smart grid testing facilities, test beds, and large-scale demonstrations. By active participation, Austria’s position and leading role on the forefront of international Smart Grids development has been strengthened.
IEA Bioenergy Task 39: Commercialization of Conventional and Advanced Liquid Biofuels from Biomass (Working Period 2016 - 2018)
IEA Bioenergy Task 39 deals with the commercialization of conventional and advanced biofuels, including innovative raw materials such as micro-algae, their economic, environmental and social assessment and the investigation of relevant policies. Findings from countries with a committed biofuels policy are made accessible to Austria, and success stories of Austrian industry, research and policy are promoted internationally.
IEA EBC Annex 68: Indoor Air Quality Design and Control in Low Energy Residential Buildings
In this project, the scientific basis and data for a coupled calculation and evaluation of indoor air quality and energy efficiency of residential buildings were developed. Assessment metrics and detailed air pollutant models were developed and integrated into the building simulation to derive guidance for the planning and operation of energy-efficient residential buildings.
