IEA PVPS Task 12: Photovoltaics (PV) Sustainability Activities (working period 2024 - 2027)

Photovoltaics (PV) is a renewable energy source that is an important technology for the energy transition. For this reason, or rather despite this, it is important to consider sustainability aspects in PV as well. End-of-life solutions in particular play an important role, as a strong increase in the number of end-of-life modules is expected in the coming years. Well-functioning recycling methods, repair possibilities or reuse options are of great importance. In this project, these existing methods and capacities in Austria are being researched and published in reports and workshops.

IEA PVPS Task 12: PV Environmental Health And Safety (working period 2016-2018)

The aim of IEA PVPS Task 12 is to foster international collaboration in the area of photovoltaics and environment. That includes compiling and disseminating accurate Information on environment, health, safety, and other aspects of sustainability associated with the life-cycle of photovoltaics. The austrian contribution addresses LCA, implementation of sustainability aspects and dissemination.

IEA SHC Task 42/ECES Annex 29: Compact Thermal Energy Storage - Material Development for System Integration

The key accomplishments of the task are summarized in the following points: New material characterizing methods were investigated, a new standard for an improved DSC measurement method has been developed, a data base for PCM, TCM and sorption materials was developed and established, advances in the numerical modelling of materials, compact thermal storage systems were developed for different material applications, a tool for the economic evaluation of thermal energy storages has been developed. Also numerous joint R&D Projects and more than twenty publications arose from the IEA-SHC Task 42 networking activity.

Interregional Logistics- and Procurement Network for Forest Fuel in Austria

A concept for a cooperative forest fuel supply chain network for a large part of Austria (regions of Salzburg, Upper Austria, Lower Austria, Vienna) is developed in order to minimise transport-, storage- and total system costs while simultaneously increasing supply guarantee for the plants.

The central aim of this international research cooperation is to make industrial processes accessible for solar thermal plants. To achieve this aim basic information is elaborated and components as well as system engineering concepts are developed. Furthermore the intention of Task 33/IV is to survey a detail state of the art in the field of solar process heat that has a validity for Europe. The work of JOANNEUM RESEARCH - Institute of Sustainable Techniques and Systems focuses mainly on the contents of Subtask B.

Energy center for the production of heat, power, substitute natural gas and liquid biofuels

The project deals with the production of synthesis gas from biological fuels and biological residues using steam blown gasification. This synthesis gas will be used for polygeneration especially for heat, power, gaseous (substitute natural gas, SNG) and/or liquid fuel production.
