Technology and Innovation Roadmap "BioHeating and Cooling"

The Roadmap links with the energy research strategy of the Austrian Council for Research. It was developped together with national stakeholders from industry to deduct recommendations for policy makers. It includes clear suggestions for research topics until 2020 and provides an outlook on the contribution of biomass to the heating sector of a decarbonised energy system in 2050.
IEA Bioenergy Task 37: Energy from Biogas and Landfill Gas (Working Period 2010 - 2012)
Key issues for realisation and dissemination of extraction of biogas from byproducts, waste and bioenergy crops were modulated by international experts.
IEA Bioenergy Task 33: Thermal Gasification of Biomass (Working Period 2010 - 2012)
Obtaining, processing and dissemination of information about international development in the field of thermal gasification of biomass as well as leadership of several key aspects of the task.
IEA Bioenergy Task 39: Commercialization of Conventional and Advanced Liquid Biofuels from Biomass (Working Period 2016 - 2018)
IEA Bioenergy Task 39 deals with the commercialization of conventional and advanced biofuels, including innovative raw materials such as micro-algae, their economic, environmental and social assessment and the investigation of relevant policies. Findings from countries with a committed biofuels policy are made accessible to Austria, and success stories of Austrian industry, research and policy are promoted internationally.

Optimization of methane production - the Methane Energy Value Model
The biogas production from energy crops will be analyzed and optimized. Energy crops are grown in an environmentally friendly and sustainable crop rotation system. The project provides a secure basis of data for the biogas production and utilisation. Farmers will invest more into the biogas technology.
Best Biogas Practice
Compilation of guidelines and benchmarks for "best biogas practice" to ensure efficient biogas production. Constitution of an Austrian network including all partners in the biogas production cycle.
Upgrading of biogas for the gas distribution system of Salzburg
Development of a cost-effective cleaning unit, free of waste-products, for the upgrading of biogas to natural gas quality. Elaboration of the basis for a demonstration project injecting biogas into the gas distribution system of Salzburg.
Energy center for the production of heat, power, substitute natural gas and liquid biofuels
The project deals with the production of synthesis gas from biological fuels and biological residues using steam blown gasification. This synthesis gas will be used for polygeneration especially for heat, power, gaseous (substitute natural gas, SNG) and/or liquid fuel production.
Virtual power plants for self-sustaining regions
Geographic methods for the combination of renewable energy sources to create "virtual power plants" and development of self-sustaining regions in terms of energy-balance and the Kyoto target.
Energy-self-sufficient district Güssing
Development of a concept that shows the possibility of changing the energy supply of a district from fossil to 100% renewable energy carrier
Use of thermal cooling technologies and optimal combination with other heat energy consumers to use during summer the available district heating based on renewable energy sources: example of the municipality of Mureck
Optimal use of heating energy from a biogas CHP in the municipality of Mureck through demand side measures; the multifunctional energy centre Mureck on the way towards thermal air-conditioning: Multi-Mukli
Feed-in and system integration of biogas in existing gas grids
Method for assessment of technological aspects of biogas supply to existing gas grids. Definition of characteristic numbers for quantitative an qualitative analysis. Aspects of systems integration.
Integration of decentralised renewable energies in existing fossil district heating grids
Analysis of potentials as well as technical / economical and organisational solutions to integrate decentralised heating power production from renewables into existing fossil heating grids.
Agriculture 2020
Agriculture will become an important supplier of sustainable energy services for society. However, this sector can only fulfil this role if it operates on the base of sustainable energy provision itself. The project will determine the necessary measures to achieve this state for a concrete regional setting (eastern Styria) by the year 2020.
Safety and Authorization of Biomass Gasification Plants
Biomass gasification is a success promising technology for the combined heat and power production based on the utilization of domestic biomass. With this project a safety and commissioning guideline for the technology was created for the enhancement of the technology's market introduction.
Development of agitation systems in biogas plants in order to optimize mixing-behaviour and to reduce energy demand with the help of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation
The purpose of this project is the investigation of the mixing-behaviour and performance of the agitation systems in biogas plants, and to present them through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation. This EDP-tool can model and predict the actual fluid dynamics in a closed system. Thus it may help to plan optimal reactor geometries, position and combination of agitation systems as well as to minimize the energy requirements.
Regional acceptance of biogas power plants - suitability and availability of energy-plants
Development of an calculation tool for future biogas power plant operators and planners to check the regional acceptance of their power plants as well as possible energy-plants and their availability.
