The EU funded "eco2building" construction system in a timber-frame based modular design represents a systematic approach for energy efficient commercial and industrial buildings. The aim of the subproject 7 is to aggregate a "normal" general planning process with innovative additional services. In this project, different building-greening systems and plant/substrate types, combined with various PV modules, had been examined on a Viennese school. The influence on the hygrothermal behaviour of the building, energy-saving potential, humidity, shading, noise reduction, water retention and heat island effect are being scientifically explained. Basic research is being conducted for a sustainable cycle-oriented system for the building-integrated recycling of wastewater and food waste. This includes nutrient recovery for a sustainable circulation system (production of plant fertiliser and biochar), electricity production to meet the demand (up to 15 %) of plus-energy buildings, as well as water recovery for irrigation of the building's own or urban greenery and for summer cooling.
