Solar energy - a significant economic factor

Major goals of this study were determination of the number of jobs provided in the thermal solar energy sector, the added economic value created in this sector and the predicted effects of achieving the goals, in order to better evaluate the economic significance of the use of thermal solar energy.
City of Tomorrow
City of Tomorrow puts emphasis on the built infrastructure in connection with urban energy systems, both on a district-level and within the wider agglomeration (suburban areas).
Energy Systems of Tomorrow
"Energy Systems of Tomorrow" focuses on the development of new technologies and concepts for a flexible and efficient energy system based on renewable energy sources.
Factory of Tomorrow
Applying the principles of sustainability will contribute to securing our prosperity and quality of life in the long run. The orientation towards sustainability not only contributes to relieving the environment, it also opens up completely new opportunities for the economy. It helps to develop more intelligent and more efficient solutions and products to meet our needs and, at the same time, to save on energy and raw materials.
MeteoR – mechanical-thermochemical process combinations for the recycling of fine fractions from waste treatment facilities
In waste treatment plants large quantities of fine fractions are generated. Due to their heterogeneity and properties, these fractions are currently not used although they contain a whole range of materials that represent valuable resources. The aim of the project MeteoR is to enable the utilization of all components (mineral, metallic, and combustible) of fine fractions by combining mechanical and thermochemical processes, to close material cycles and to significantly contribute to the further development of the Austrian circular economy and the reduction of CO2 emissions.
DeB-AT – Detection and separation of portable batteries from mixed waste using sensor technology and artificial intelligence
The DeB-AT project plans the development of a laboratory or pilot plant demonstrator for the targeted separation of batteries from mixed waste streams. The concept of the demonstrator follows the methodological elaboration of the necessary requirements of optical sensors and the separation technology for AI-supported detection of the general population of batteries.
DiRecT – Direct recycling and upcycling of titanium chips
In the project DiRecT, different new technologies will be developed and evaluated which make it possible to directly recycle the chips generated in the manufacturing process of high-quality titanium products or to produce directly from the chips near-net-shape components or improved semi-finished products (upcycling).
CE4ALL – Circular economy for all – Incentives, enablers and inhibitors for sustainable consumption
Based on an analysis of current milieu-specific consumption behavior, the CE4ALL project aims to identify sector-specific incentives and enablers for strengthening the circular economy and to uncover inhibitors. Another focus of this work is the consideration of inclusion aspects. CE4ALL is working on a consumption-centered investigation beyond the previously production-oriented considerations of the circular economy.
IRONER - Potential for innovative and sustainable recycling of steel
Within the framework of the IRONER project, open questions were identified and the necessary innovations for increased steel recycling were developed. In addition to a material flow analysis, stakeholder interviews and ecological and economic considerations, the influences of increased steel recycling on metallurgical processes and material properties of steel products were examined.
FIVA - Window prototypes with integrated vacuum glazing
This project targets the further development of windows with integrated vacuum glazing. Such glass products regularly feature a very low Ug-value, and their dimension is in comparison to insulation glass thin and light. As such, these products offer a new alternative for highly-insulating window constructions, and thus also for energy-efficiency measures in buildings. The project is based on the findings of a previous exploratory project (MOTIVE) and focuses on the construction of functional prototypes of vacuum glass windows together with business partners.
DRoB - Drones and robotics for efficient monitoring and management of green facades or roofs
Strategic transdisciplinary networking of experts for the analysis of innovative monitoring and management systems for green facades and roofs. The aim is to demonstrate the potential of different UAV sensors for vegetation monitoring and robots for maintenance measurements of green façades.
CircuPack - Recyclable materials for food packaging with a low ecological footprint
The goal of the project is to develop sustainable and environmentally friendly food packaging with an improved ecological footprint. It is important to develop a new process control that ensures both food compatibility and the sustainability of the resulting product.
PolyBacTex - Converting mixed textile waste into recycled fibres and cellulose for sustainable production
The project PolyBacTex is developing a solution for recycling of used mixed textiles by chemically separating and biotechnologically upgrading the individual fibre types (cellulose and polyester). This allows cellulose fibres to be recovered and returned to the fibre production process.
Economic efficiency and CO2 assessment of selected biomass-based energy sources for Austria (BIOWERT)
Contribution to decarbonisation 2040
FEELings - User Feedback for Energy Efficiency in Buildings
User behavior is a key factor for the energy consumption and the actual energetic performance of a building. A new type of user feedback system will be investigated in this research project. Users provide feedback on the sensed room quality. The data obtained by the feedback system are used to optimize settings of building services in order to improve the energy efficiency and the comfort in the building. A basic proof of concept of this system will be undertaken by means of two use cases.
CoolAIR - Predictive control of natural nighttime ventilation and daylight-optimized shading for passive building cooling
Natural nighttime ventilation and daylight-optimized shadowing are high potential approaches to efficiently and economical cool buildings. Nevertheless, the full potential cannot be acquired, since, if at all, such behavior is manually initiated by users. Goal of this project is the development of an automated, self-learning system that can assess the full cooling capabilities and establish an alternative to conventional air conditioning systems.
metaTGA - Metadata and process models for open BIM in building service engineering
The objective of this research project is to design a methodology for developing data and process models and to apply them by modelling selected MEP systems. A particular but not exclusive focus is put on the renewable heating technologies, e.g. heat pumps, solar heat and biomass as well as ventilation systems. The data and process models developed in this research project will be scientifically evaluated in two pilot projects. The models, the approaches taken during development and the project team’s experiences with the pilot application of the models will be disseminated openly.
HotCity - Gamification as a possibility to generate data for energy-oriented neighbourhood planning
The aim of the project was a functional test to determine whether an up-to-date data set of energy-oriented data can be collected for neighbourhood planning through gamification, cost-efficiently, quickly and reliably. This had been determined using the example of the potential determination of industrial and commercial waste heat sources in Vienna and Graz.
ParaSol - Multifunctional solar canopies for urban streets and places
With the city of Leoben as a use case this exploratory project will, for the first time ever, examine the spatial effects, synergy- and energy potentials of newly developed wide-span light-weight solar canopies for streets and squares in urban public space as well as their implications on the townscape, the image of the city and the city function.
AIA4ALL - development of open, modular and automatable employer’s information requirements (EIR) and BIM execution plan (BEP)
The Employer's Information Requirements - EIR (German: AIA) - serves the client to define goals and use cases for a BIM-based construction project. The aim of this project is to create a modular, machine-readable AIA that can be seamlessly integrated into the tool landscape of openBIM projects. This is done by developing an open platform for creating use cases for the AIA.
