Of the available biomass conversion technologies for production of more usable energy forms, fast pyrolysis is the least developed, but offers the benefits of a liquid fuel with concomitant advantages of easy storage and transport as well as higher power generation efficiencies than fossil fuelled systems at the smaller scales of operation that are likely to be realised from bioenergy systems. Bio-waste Digestion Markgrafneusiedl: The example of a successful bio-waste fermentation plant described in this contribution is operated by Bio-waste Digestion "Markgrafneusiedl". The plant with an annual capacity of 15,000 tonnes went into operation in 2006. It can process a variety of bio-waste material such as waste from the meat processing industry, separately collected bio-waste from households and even food waste contained in steel barrels of up to 200 litres. To date the land use sector has failed to contribute to achieving climate mitigation goals in proportion to its potential. A major reason for this is the lack of a sufficiently robust and attractive solution to the non-permanence (reversibility) of carbon stocks that would garner stron support from Annex-I country stakeholders, including carbon market investors. Unless a solid solution to the reversibility problem is developed, REDD+ will also fail to result in significant increase in the use of forests to mitigate climate change. Englisch

In Task 42 "Biorefining" werden ausgehend von den Erfahrungen in den 11 teilnehmenden Staaten Lebenszyklus-Bewertungsmethoden (ökonomisch, ökologisch, sozial) bis zu einer umfassenden Nachhaltigkeitsbewertung (LCSA) entwickelt. Die 5 vielversprechendsten Bioraffineriekonzepte mit Holz (wie Hackgut, Sägemehl, Rinde) als Rohstoffe werden mittels der entwickelten Methodik bewertet und die Ergebnisse in einem 'Bioraffinerie Fact-Sheet" zusammengefasst dargestellt.

Neben Aktivitäten aus den IEA Bioenergy Tasks mit österreichischer Beteiligung werden die Aspekte stofflicher und energetischer Nutzung beleuchtet. Kurze Meldungen, Veranstaltungsrückblicke, Veröffentlichungen und Veranstaltungshinweise runden die Inhalte ab.
