Sunny research! Sustainable building design with high energy performance for a modern commercial building

Commercial buildings of basic to medium standard are hardly ever designed by a high quality of innovative building services engineering. In the project Sunny research! a sustainable building design with high energy performance was developed. The aim was to adapt the aspects of Renewable Energy, thermal comfort and wellness in work.
IEA HPP Annex 33: Compact heat exchangers for heat pumping equipment
International cooperation aiming at widening the use of compact heat exchangers in heat pumping equipment. The goal of this project is to identify compact heat exchangers, either existing or under development, that may be applied in heat pumping equipment such as compression or absorption heat pumps.
Waste heat utilisation and use of renewable energy sources in a metal-working enterprise
Use of waste heat and covering of the remaining energy demand by the renewable energy sources hydropower and biomass in a metal-processing company.
Application of the Stirling cycle for environmentally compatible cooling - systems analysis
Conventional cooling has adverse effects on environment (eg. ozone depletion, global warming). One option for environmentally compatible cooling systems for near ambient temperatures (-10 to -50°C) is the Stirling cooler with environmental friendly process.
Pathways to sustainable construction. Experiences and prospective European research strategies

The aim of this study is to investigate the international research context of the programme "Building of Tomorrow" (with a focus on central, eastern and southern European countries) and to identify co-operation potentials.
Ecologically friendly resin impregnation of rotating machines with the use of the joule effect
Windings of rotating machines or electrical generators (e. g. wind and water power generators) are impregnated with resin. A new technology using the heating effect of current is investigated. The high efficiency of heating with the joule effect results in quick heating of stator leading to fast gelling of the resin, which implies low emission.
New Standards for Old Houses. Sustainable Renovation Concepts for Houses on Estates Built Between the Wars and Post-War

The many housing estates of detached houses in Austria built in the times of economic crisis between the wars and post-war as part of publicly funded housing programmes are the starting point for this research project. The aim is to offer detailed guidelines with basic planning principles for the renovation of these housing estates with detached houses, aiming to reach the standard of a low-energy house or a passive house.
Energy Services as an Integral Part of the Distribution
Concept development for the implementation of efficient energy services as part of grid connected energy supply to increase energy end-use efficiency.

Technical status of ventilation systems for buildings

Evaluation of existing ventilation systems in Austria considering technical quality and practicability.
Feasibility study of innovative absorption heat pump processes
A feasibility study of innovative absorption heat pump processes for strategic orientation and further development of heat pumping technology and its applications.
Refrigerating plants in hotel and catering industry
To the frequent uses of refrigerating plants in hotel and catering industry was not paid a lot of attention in the way of energy efficiency so far. We are talking about plug-in cooling units and custom-made cooling equipment. Aim of the project: finding out the manner and amount of refrigeration usage, as well as the estimation of energy savings potential and measures, especially for custom-made cooling equipment.

Energy Performance Contracting (IEA DSM Implementing Agreement - Task X)
The objective of this task within the IEA DSM programme is to facilitate the use of performance contracts and other energy service company (ESCO) contracts. In this scenario, the ESCO has taken on the project's performance risk by guaranteeing a specified level of energy savings. Its compensation for this risk is directly tied to achieving savings. The financing for such a project could come from the ESCO, the equipment supplier or a third-party company.
Development of thermal solar systems with unproblematic stagnation behaviour
Research on the influence of collector hydraulics, piping and the arrangement of plant components on the stagnation behaviour of thermal solar systems.
Production of bioethanol in addition with heat, power and valuable byproducts
The production of bioethanol in Bruck/Leitha in addition to the production of heat, power and valuable by-products from biomass will be optimized by a new process simulation tool under the target of maximum usage of waste and low temperature heat and optimal source and product usage.

ZSG - Sustainable Concepts in urban redevelopment and building refurbishment

Project on research and implementation for ecological and energy efficient concepts, urban redevelopment and building refurbishment. Performance of a routing project on a former ter-ritory of the Austrian armed forces in Steyr.
PROMISE - Production with solar energy. Study on the potential of thermal solar energy systems in trade and industry depending on the production processes
Documentation of realized plants for the use of thermal solar energy in trade and industry companies. Identification of production processes and branches, which have a demand for low-temperature heat. Determine the potential of solarthermal systems to provide low-temperature heat. Case studies for branches and processes with the highest mid-term potential for realization of a solar plant.
Development of methods and procedures to automate the operative production control and scheduling considering the aspects of sustainability
The production order doesn't only influence logistic and operational ratios, but also shows effects on the environment as well as ergonomics and the staff's psychology. Aim of the project was to develop a method to optimize the job order planning in consideration of an integrated evaluation in terms of sustainable economic activity.
