IEA ES Task 43: Storage for renewables and flexibility through standardized use of building mass
Thermal building mass activation uses building masses to condition interior spaces, but can also function as energy storage through targeted overheating/undercooling. This storage potential can be used for local and grid-connected renewable thermal and electrical energy (Power2Heat). The project develops new content on the construction, control and business models of such storages and disseminates it as guidelines, data and on the basis of best-practice objects that have been implemented.
IEA AFC Annex 35: Fuel cells for portable applications (Working period 2017 - 2019)
The aim of Annex 35 is the information exchange on the status and new developments of portable fuel cell systems and comprises the development and manufacture of membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) all the way through to system components such as electronic converters or gas supply units. In addition the setup and configuration of hybridized systems and the key topics of secure operation, codes and standards are of interest.

The aim of this project is to show that even at first glance unrealistic and seemingly unworkable solutions can contribute to overcome or mitigate increasingly global problems. Monitoring and comparison of performance of thermally activated building components in two similarly built, inhabited detached houses with different energy sources (wind and solar power). The functionality of energy supply through wind power or solar energy will be investigated as well as the verification of the practicability of self-regulating system control due to building temperature behaviour. The results provide an insight into the calculation assumptions, system control and feasibility of the smart grid technology.
IEA SHC Task 61/EBC Annex 77: Integrated Solutions for Daylighting and Electric Lighting
Lighting accounts for around 15% of global electricity consumption - intelligent coordination of daylighting and electric lighting solutions together with integral lighting controls enable significant energy savings. At the same time, the solutions must be optimally planned in a user-centered approach based on the visual and non-visual effects of light. The task analysed user requirements as well as existing technologies and design methods and documented exemplary implementations in case studies.

A new train station is being built near the exit portal of the future Koralm railway tunnel in Carinthia, in connection with a CO2-neutral technology park.
