smartEXT - extended application boundaries for proven passive house technology
The present study aims to explore the application options for compact units (ventilation devices including micro heat pumps, developed for passive houses) in low energy buildings. Compact ventilation units for heat recovery, heating and domestic hot water shall bear the basic heating load, whereas peak loads shall be covered by newly-developed auxiliary heating equipment combined with intelligent control algorithms. This allows increased energy efficiency as well as cost effectiveness together with higher living quality and lower ecological load.

Strawbale-workshops are considered as the best way to inseminate this ecological building-technique. The "virtual building site" has some decisive advantages over the common situation: it does not depend on the weather, allows the comparative study of different constructing methods and can, as a permanent installation, be used as an exhibition.

A framework of assessment for the disposal of building materials, constructions and buildings will be developed. The results will be included in the OI3-indicator and in the building assessment tool Total Quality Building. In this research project, models for refurbishment and restructuring of school buildings were developed. The reconstruction concepts contain lists of measures for deploying sustainable building techniques and exemplary case studies for the reorganisation of buildings of different typologies.

The project goal is to adapt the photovoltaic (PV) modules of crystalsol and an appropriately designed production process in order to integrate the flexible photoactive layer cost-effectively into waterproof roof membranes. At the end of the project the first membranes with integrated PV-layers will be produced. The success of this project would lead to enormous cost cutting and technological development advantages in the BIPV technology.

The Manual for Energy Consultants had been adapted to present and future needs in energy consulting.
