IEA Bioenergy Task 37: Energy from Biogas (Working Period 2025 - 2027)

Anaerobic digestion systems are an important component in waste and wastewater management as well as in agriculture. The state of the art of the technologies and the development of the sector vary greatly internationally. The main topics of the exchange of experience in task 37 are Co-benefits of biogas in the circular economy, framework conditions for digestate utilization, monitoring of microbial cultures in biogas plants, and comparison of economic framework conditions.

IEA Bioenergy Task 37: Energy from Biogas (Working Period 2019 - 2021)

Aim of Task 37 is to accelerate development and progress of biogas technology in the member countries. During the working period 2019-2021 the focus lies on the ecologically and economically sound implementation of biogas technology in agricultural and industrial processes.

IEA Bioenergy Task 42: Biorefining in a Circular Economy (Working Period 2019-2021)

Biorefineries can provide a wide range of products such as energy, fuels, chemicals, food, feed and materials based on renewable resources. In this project, relevant information on biorefineries regarding technologies and biobased products will be compiled at international expert level and results on an ecological and economic assessment of selected biorefineries will be provided.

IEA SHC Task 69: Solar Hot Water for 2030

Solar water heating will play a crucial role in the decarbonization of the energy system for 2030 and beyond. IEA SHC Task 69 focuses on two technologies which are likely to play the biggest role in the global solar hot water market: thermosyphon and photovoltaic (PV) hot water systems. For these technologies global market surveys, systems and component optimizations, cost reduction analyses and revision of standards are being conducted to accelerate growth in target markets.

IEA Hydrogen Task 52: Hydrogen for Iron/Steelmaking

With the aim of replacing fossil fuels in steel production, this task investigates the use of hydrogen for climate-neutral iron and steel production. The state of the art of existing and new processes is recorded, evaluated and compared. Based on this, technological, infrastructural and market-related findings are prepared and published for research, industry and politics.

IEA Bioenergy Task 33: Gasification of biogenic and waste feedstocks for a sustainable future (Working Period 2025 - 2027)

Thermal gasification will be crucial for the energy transition. Austria’s participation in the project strengthens the exchange of information and networking between stakeholders. This ensures that Austrian actors are regularly informed about gasification activities in other member countries. In the task workshops, they can also present their own research and industry projects and benefit from international knowledge sharing.

IEA Solar Heating and Cooling (SHC)

The IEA's Solar Heating and Cooling program has been carrying out joint research activities in the field of solar thermal energy since 1977. The focus is on the active and passive use of solar energy for heating and cooling of buildings, solar district heating and solar heat for industrial applications.

IEA SHC Task 73: PVT Heating Systems (Working period 2025 - 2028)

IEA SHC Task 73 accelerates the development and market uptake of photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) heating systems. Across four subtasks – liquid and air systems, awareness & policy, and modeling & monitoring – the task unites industry and research partners to consolidate KPIs, test and design approaches, standards, digital tools and monitoring data, remove barriers and speed up scalable building applications.
