IEA Bioenergy Task 39: Biofuels to Decarbonize Transport (Working period 2026 - 2027)
IEA Bioenergy Task 39 is a network of international experts promoting decarbonisation through sustainable biofuels with low fossil carbon intensity. In the current triennium, the focus is on: implementation and promotion of emerging markets, demonstration of advanced biofuel technologies, development of biofuels for aviation, shipping and heavy-duty transport, and synergies with e-fuels and BECCUS technologies.
IEA Hydrogen Task MMV: Subsurface Measurement, Monitoring and Verification Programs for Underground Hydrogen Storage and Transmission Infrastructure
The project develops harmonized MMV strategies for underground hydrogen storage and distribution within the IEA Hydrogen TCP framework. It aims to ensure safe, monitored, and socially accepted H₂ infrastructure. The national contribution integrates international knowledge into Austrian standards, strengthens expert committees, and supports industry, research, and authorities through targeted knowledge transfer and dissemination.
IEA Hydrogen (Hydrogen TCP)
The Hydrogen TCPs coordinates joint R&D activities with the aim of advancing the development and deployment of safe and sustainable technologies for the production, storage and supply of clean and affordable hydrogen and its derivatives for use in industry, mobility, heating and electricity.
IEA Wind Task 52: Large-Scale Deployment of Wind Lidar (Working period 2022 - 2026)
Task 52 works towards the widespread adoption of wind LiDAR-systems and provides a strong opportunity to generate and spread knowledge and experience through global networking. Energiewerkstatt contributes to Task 52 with a comparative study of data availability of different LiDAR measurement principles under Alpine conditions and will take an organisational role in the creation of guidelines for the use of ground-based LiDAR in wind energy applications.
IEA Wind Task 62: Social Science for Collaborative Wind Energy Planning & Participation (Working period 2026 - 2027)
The Wind Task 62 explores social science approaches to promote acceptance and equitable participation in wind energy development. The Austrian contribution “WindPlan” uses innovative, participatory and inclusive methods based on immersive 3D visualizations and interactive gamification elements to contribute to fair and transparent planning processes and create a best practice example for sustainable wind energy development.
IEA Wind Energy Systems (Wind TCP)
The mission of the Wind TCP is to stimulate co-operation on wind energy research and development and to provide high quality information and analysis to member governments and commercial sector leaders. The focus lies on technology development and deployment, as well as market and policy instruments.
IEA-SHC Task 65: Solar Cooling for the Sunbelt Regions
IEA SHC Task 65 focuses on cost-efficient, safe, and reliable solar cooling systems optimized for hot climates. This requires cost reductions, system simplifications, life-cycle cost-benefit assessments and supportive policies. Austria plays a key role in Task 65, particularly in the assessment of technologies (Subtask C). Through scientific analyses, pilot projects, and workshops, market barriers are to be overcome, and solar cooling is to be established as a viable solution.
Concentrated Solar Power Technologies - SolarPACES
SolarPACES aims at significantly increasing the share of concentrated solar power (CSP) in the global production of renewable energies. To this end, SolarPACES supports technological development and partnerships for developing CSP through an international network of independent experts. It coordinates and advances solar technology research, by focusing on the next generation of technologies; provides recommendations to policy makers and organises international conferences and workshops. In order to increase the transparency of the market and reduce risks associated with project development, SolarPACES also develops guidelines and standards for CSP industries.
Working Party on Renewable Energy Technologies (REWP)
Central tasks of the Renewable Energy Working Party (REWP) are to support the IEA research programs, discuss current energy and technology policy issues among the IEA member states, advise the IEA Secretariat in Paris on issues related to R&D, technology and market introduction, and support the IEA in their outreach strategy.
