IEA - Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Technology Collaboration Programme (HEV-TCP)

The vision of the Technology Collaboration Programme on Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (HEV TCP) is that the electric drive will be used as the predominant transportation mode in a sustainable transport system that is preferably powered by renewable energy and does not produce harmful emissions.

Short Description

Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (HEVs) have the potential to reduce energy consumption and the dependence on fossil fuels in the transport sector and to improve local and global air quality. Therefore the HEV TCP aims to support the extension of the market potential of HEVs.

Although manufacturing costs have significantly decreased since the first HEVs were commercialised, price remains a barrier for large-scale deployment. Other barriers include a lack of infrastructure and the lack of cross-border harmonisation of recharging mechanisms.

The mission of the HEV TCP is contributing to overcome these barriers through

  • Producing objective information for policy and decision makers on hybrid and electric vehicle technology, projects, and programmes and their effects on energy efficiency and the environment,
  • Disseminating relevant information to the International Energy Agency (IEA) community, national governments, industries, and to other interested organizations,
  • Facilitating international collaboration in pre-competitive research and demonstration projects and to function as a promoter for Research, Development, Demonstration, and Deployment involving shared resources from multiple countries,
  • Providing a platform for reliable information on hybrid and electric vehicles.
