IEA EV Task 53: Interoperability of Bidirectional Charging (INBID) (Working period 2025 - 2027

This task intends to act and help to test the conformance of the upcoming ISO15118-2X amendments referring to bidirectional charging. In addition, it gives countries and members, which do not own labs or do not have a large automotive industry, the opportunity to participate in the development of interoperable bidirectional charging common and to coordinate their activities in an international framework.

Short Description

Situation and Problem

Although the international standard ISO 15118-20 for bidirectional charging of electric vehicles (V2X) via the Combined Charging System (CCS) has existed since April 2022, it is not yet widely available in customer products. Instead, individual vehicle manufacturers are offering proprietary solutions. This development is problematic as it leads to a fragmented landscape of incompatible ecosystems, jeopardizing the necessary interoperability across the entire value chain (vehicle, charging station, grid operator).

Objectives and Innovative Content of IEA EV TCP Task 53

To counteract fragmentation, the IEA EV TCP Task 53 aims to develop a holistic approach to ensure interoperability, independent from individual manufacturer solutions.

Core Objectives:

  • Assessment of the Status Quo: Real vehicles and charging stations will be tested in suitable laboratories to identify implementation gaps and ambiguities in the ISO 15118-20 standard.
  • Deduction of Guidelines: Recommendations and a guideline for the standard-compliant implementation of the standard for vehicle and charging station manufacturers will be developed.
  • Standardization of Communication: A proposal for standardized communication between the charging station and the grid operator will be developed.
  • Knowledge Transfer: The developed solutions and concepts will be disseminated throughout the electromobility sector.

Austria contributes results from the AIT's emerging V2G laboratory infrastructure as well as from national R&D projects (such as V2G Network, Storebility2Market). The integration of national stakeholders is carried out via the "V2G Allianz Österreich" (V2G Alliance Austria).

Anticipated Results

Austrias participation in IEA EV TCP Task 53 is expected to deliver the following results and findings:

  • Shaping Task 53 activities by contributing Austrian R&D results and interests.
  • Establishment of a laboratory and testing infrastructure for bidirectional charging in Austria and international positioning of this infrastructure.
  • Connecting Austrian stakeholders from industry and science to international R&D activities, observing emerging global developments.
  • Forging of a national network of experts and stakeholders for continuous information exchange via communication and dissemination activities, such as annual events on bidirectional charging.
