IEA EBC Annex 97 / Cities Task 5 - Sustainable Cooling in Cities Seminar Series: Upcoming session with Rohan Agrawal

11. November 2026
Microsoft Teams, Wien, AT

The Seminar Series is a biweekly online forum where project participants share their research, experiences, and practical approaches related to sustainable cooling and climate adaptation in cities. The upcoming session features Rohan Agrawal presenting "Uncovering urban microclimate with citizen sensors".

Organizer

The seminar series is hosted by the Institute of Building Research & Innovation as part of the project "IEA EBC Annex 97 / Cities Task 5: Sustainable Cooling in Cities".

Content Description

Each session explores a different topic and offers opportunities for discussion and knowledge exchange. This seminar focuses on the "Uncovering urban microclimate with citizen sensors".

Citizen weather stations (CWS) are creating new possibilities for observing urban climate at the spatial and temporal scales needed for heat adaptation, building performance analysis, and microclimate modelling.

Traditional official weather networks provide high-quality observations, but their spatial density is often too limited to capture neighbourhood-scale differences in temperature driven by land cover, urban form, shading, ventilation, and local exposure.

This presentation explores how dense CWS networks can complement official observations and support a more detailed understanding of urban heat patterns. We will discuss how crowdsourced observations can be transformed into more usable urban climate datasets through harmonisation, quality assessment, correction, and uncertainty-aware interpretation.

The presentation also focuses on how improved CWS datasets can support downstream applications such as high-resolution urban temperature mapping, model evaluation, heat-risk assessment, and climate-sensitive planning.

Target Audience

The seminar series is open to project participants, researchers, practitioners, policymakers, students, and anyone interested in sustainable cooling, urban climate adaptation, and related topics. Participants from all disciplines and backgrounds are welcome.
