IEA EBC Annex 97 / Cities Task 5 - Sustainable Cooling in Cities Seminar Series: Upcoming session with Simona Bianchi

28. October 2026
Microsoft Teams, Wien, AT

The Seminar Series is a biweekly online forum where project participants share their research, experiences, and practical approaches related to sustainable cooling and climate adaptation in cities. The upcoming session features Simona Biachi presenting "From Heat to Multi-Hazard: Performance-Based Methods for Resilient Design".

Organizer

The seminar series is hosted by the Institute of Building Research & Innovation as part of the project "IEA EBC Annex 97 / Cities Task 5: Sustainable Cooling in Cities".

Content Description

Each session explores a different topic and offers opportunities for discussion and knowledge exchange.

The upcoming session features Simona Bianchi (TU Delft)  presenting "From Heat to Multi-Hazard: Performance-Based Methods for Resilient Design".

As climate-induced hazards intensify, the built environment requires resilience strategies that simultaneously address compound threats, multi-domain impacts and multi-source uncertainty.

This talk presents performance-based methodologies developed through the EU-funded MULTICARE and NWO-funded RECLIMATE projects designed to meet these challenges.

Progressing from loss-based performance matrices to advanced probabilistic loss modeling, these frameworks enable consistent comparison of design alternatives. They integrate extreme heat into multi-hazard risk assessments using harmonized metrics, such as expected annualized losses and probable maximum losses.

Applications ranging from individual multi-story buildings to urban-scale planning demonstrate their potential to guide adaptation prioritization and drive resource-efficient investment under future extremes.

Target Audience

The seminar series is open to project participants, researchers, practitioners, policymakers, students, and anyone interested in sustainable cooling, urban climate adaptation, and related topics. Participants from all disciplines and backgrounds are welcome.
