Content Description
The ongoing discussions about climate change and the increasing criticism regarding the option of nuclear power give decentralized renewable power generation technologies a world wide boost. While technology competition is in full swing, Austria’s smart grids community is engaged in European initiatives, such as the Smart Grids D-A-CH cooperation and ERA-Net and internationally in the ISGAN activities. The highlight article "Smart Grids - Intelligent Energy Systems of Tomorrow" offers an overview and further information.
Meanwhile the international Smart Grids Week has been established as main event in the international strategic smart grids process, taking place at locations with leading activities in Smart Grids. The choice for Bregenz as venue for the Smart Grids Week 2012 has been taken because two of the projects which are much noticed in the professional scene are the “Smart Grid Demo-Region Walsertal” and the e-mobility project “Vlotte” in the Vorarlberg region. These activities will be presented at the Smart Grids Week | Bregenz 2012 in detail and first results regarding the implementation will be discussed. In addition to other international Smart Grids demo-activities and new research findings, current topics such as the issues of the increased need for flexibility in the power system, issues of storage and the roles of various actors around business processes, which still need to be defined, are in the center of the international Smart Grids Week 2012.

10:00 - 17:30 PV & Distribution Networks -Activities in European and International Networks
High penetration of Photovoltaic in distribution networks is an important topic in various European and international Networks. Amongst them Task 14 of the "IEA Photovoltaic Power Systems" Program, the PV/Solar ERA-Net as well as the Smart Grid-ERA Net; the "International Smart Grid Action Network (ISGAN)" of the international Energy Agency and global networks which coordinate Laboratory-Infrastructure for DG-Integration are working intensively in related cooperative research projects.
This workshop aimed at the exchange of actual results, finding of synergies, learning from best practice as well as the establishment of new collaboration.

9:00 - 12:30 D-A-CH Task Force Meetings
Venue: Krafthaus illwerke vkw
Language: GermanThe Smart Grids D-A-CH technology cooperation as platform for knowledge exchange and cooperation in the field of Smart Grids and electro mobility has established the Smart Grids Week in Austria as a brain trust forum. The task forces “standardization” and “business models” organized a joint workshop on use cases for “building to grids”. Especially the compatibility of business models and system architecture was discussed. The workshop of the task force “data” concentrated on data protection and data security, another focus was on data exchange for tertiary control.

13:00 - 21:30 Excursion: Visiting Tour of the Smart Grid Demonstration Network, located in the "Biosphärenpark Großes Walsertal"
Venue: Krafthaus vkw / Großes Walsertal
Language: German and EnglishReal cases of implemented research results of the so called "Austrian Model Regions" have been presented. The participants were invited to visit innovative power control concepts for the integration of additional hydropower into the 30kV grid. The technical components are: power controller in the substation, communication system such as power line and a solar power station of 400kW. Our team will explain the interplay of the different components, the most important barriers in the implementation phase and the insights of a real smart grids implementation.
