KLIMADEMO VIS-A-VIS: Participatory realization of a climate-neutral demonstration building Vis-à-Vis

Participatory development of a pilot project at the interface between climate neutrality, affordability and multi-storey wooden housing based on well-founded decision-making bases in terms of renewable materials and renewable energies. The result is a multipliable carbon neutral building and the dissemination of carbon neutrality know-how to a larger audience.

Initial position/Motivation

With the building Vis-à-Vis in the urban development area Village im Dritten, a scalable, climate-neutral pilot project is to be developed in a participatory manner. The development of a role model is intended in order to show how measures on climate protection within the planning and construction sector and multi-storey affordable housing can be reconciled.

The creation of exemplary, multipliable wooden residential buildings is necessary since a large part of the Viennese residential housing construction currently involves buildings which, due to their size, are difficult to raise from renewable construction materials. Building regulations currently set strict limits on the use of wood as a construction material and partly require costly compensation measures. This is particularly challenging in subsidized housing.

Goals and innovative content

With Vis-à-Vis, essential steps are to be taken towards sustainable, circular construction. A holistic approach is required: throughout the entire life cycle from planning, building and usage to demolition the programming of the house, the building materials used, as well as energy sources and consumption are considered. On this building scale and to this extent, this is new for subsidized housing.

Ecological and economic analyzes form the basis for the widest possible use of renewable, recyclable construction materials and components. Cooperations with specialists enable the use of re-use elements. Building services facilities are optimized in terms of system and consumption.

A focal point is on joint planning with future users: In interaction with the Baugruppe Vis-à-Wien, the experienced planners in terms of participation are implementing a co-creative process in this project for the first time, in which the main focus is on the topic of climate neutrality. The involvement of the users thereby goes beyond raising awareness: The Baugruppe acquires sound knowledge and applies it in planning and use.

Methods

The research project is divided into six work packages and is based on a variety of methods. By means of desk research and workshops with experts, the term "climate neutrality" is defined on a project basis and graphically processed in the sense of science communication. Excursions to best practice examples and discussions with the planners impart hands-on knowledge.

Component structures of renewable materials and the ability of components to be dismantled are examined with regard to their technical, economic and ecological properties. Based on a matrix comparison of the variants examined, a decision for use at Vis-à-Vis is made. In the field of regenerative energies, variants of heating and cooling systems, PV system and ventilation are compared. All work steps and decisions are evaluated at regular intervals and incorporated into an overarching "climate neutrality calculation". This creates quantifiable findings.

Via workshops, the knowledge generated is not only passed on to the research team of the Baugruppe, but also to the whole Baugruppe Vis-à-Wien. A Blog, so-called "echo chambers" and lectures offer access to the challenging topic of "climate neutrality" for all interested people.

Desired results/insights

The result is a climate-neutral lighthouse project that can serve as a model for many other projects, especially in urban and social housing. A guide will show possible levers that can be used to reduce a building's emissions and that can also be used in subsidized housing.

The Baugruppe disseminates the process and the results of the project on an ongoing basis. Vis-à-Vis is thus placed in public discourse beyond specialist circles. Climate-neutral construction becomes tangible and negotiated at eye level.
