Existing building reconstruction and implementation of passive house components

Implementation of passive house components, systems and techniques into the practice of existing building reconstruction, in order to reduce the energy consumption as much as possible and to increase the living quality substantially. Craftspeople and planners, who are specialized in building renovation, should gain access to passive house know-how.

Summary

Slogan of the project:

"The future of passive house technology lies in reconstruction of existing buildings". While energy conservation of 90 % in new buildings compared to existing ones with today's technology is realizable, 90 % of the totally attainable energy saving potential in the building sector is hidden in high-quality reconstruction of existing buildings.

The keyword of the relevant conferences in the last months is "reconstruction aimed to passive house standard". If one analyses this term, no reason remains to reach exactly those 15 kW/m²a, which are prescribed for a passive house. (one considers for example the thermal bridges around the grounding of the building, which usually are not reorganizable within reasonable cost).

Vice versa there is no reasonable motivation in the existing building reorganization to disclaim on high-quality components and other construction details, which have been developed for the passive house technology.

Main goal of the project:

Implementation of passive house components, systems and techniques into the practice of existing building reconstruction, in order to reduce the energy consumption as much as possible and to increase the living quality substantially.

Numerous passive-house-certified products are ready for use in the building reconstruction. For example for exchange of windows one can select within a wide range of 40 certified products. In the field of retrofitting the roof 35-40 cm thickness of insulating material should be common practice. Within overall renovations also dwelling ventilation systems, which beyond support the mould- or pollutant decontamination as well as dampness reduction, can be installed.

There are already some examples of successfully operated ventilation systems from the practice. Although the manufacturers of larger devices approach only slowly at the low acoustic noise, high heat recovery rates and current efficiency of the fans of passive-house-suited ventilation devices, nevertheless movement at the market is noticeable.

Result of the project will be also (technical) suggestions, how products are to be developed further, in order to find broader employment in the building reconstruction. An example are here again the windows: Similarly to the renovation system, with which the old frameworks remain in the embrasure, it would be conceivable to develop a quick-replacement-system in passive house technology.

The method of the project:

Craftspeople and planners, who are specialized in building renovation, should gain access to passive house know-how.
The rich experiences of the evenly made up "Haus der Zukunft" - Project "Das Passivhaus in der Praxis" ("passive houses in practice") are the starting point for a spreading strategy for high-quality building renovation. By searches in relevant technical literature and by best practise examples the topic is to be disseminated to a broad target group. In addition there are planned expert-workshops, conferences and excursions.

Planned Results

  • Listings of passive house components, systems and techniques for the building reconstruction
  • Strategic recommendations for the implementation of passive house components, systems and techniques into the practice of the building renovation by means of spreading measures and impulse setting regarding the advancement of passive house components for the building reconstruction sector
  • Dissemination of the topic in planning and construction sector by workshops, conferences and excursions.
  • Documentation of a symposium "building renovation with passive house practice" with conception of best-practise-examples, and theoretical background
  • Documentation of a conference "fresh air into old houses" - dwelling ventilation with high efficiency
