Distributed Generation and Smart Grids - A Roadmap for Austria

Content Description

In Europe and throughout the world billions of Euros are being invested in structural changes in the electricity sector in order to meet the growing challenges facing this central infrastructure. Initiated by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology and based on results of recent research programs a Smart Grids strategy process was started in Austria some years ago.

Supported by additional means from the energy and climate funds, it was possible to extend this activity into last year. By taking steps so early, involving high levels of research, grid operators and industry as well as making use of the specalist know-how available in Austria, an exceptional starting position was created. In the course of the "Smart Grids Week Salzburg 09", current research activities will be presented and put into the international context.

Smart Grid Roadmap

In order to develop effective links between industry, the electricity sector as well as research, the Austrian Technology Platform Smart Grids was founded in 2008 - under the leadership of Siemens Austria. It was presented at the "Smart Grids Week Vienna 2008".

This platform is a union of Austrian companies and innovators in the field of Smart Grids, aiming to hedge the market position of the Austrian industry via research and innovation in the middle and long-term by fostering the necessary dialogue between the various stakeholders.

The roadmap "Smart Grids Austria" which is currently operating, will be presented and discussed at the Smart Grids Week Salzburg 09 for the first time. Within this roadmap, the opportunities and necessary frame conditions for the developments and implementation are to be demonstrated. The "Smart Grids Week Salzburg 09" is the most important event within the field of Smart Grids this year in Austria.
