IEA ISGAN Annex 7: Smart Grids Transition (Workingperiod 2017-2020)

ISGAN Annex 7 deals primarily with institutional and socio-technical issues in connection with the transition of the energy system, with smart grids at its core. It thus aims to bundle international experience and interdisciplinary research activities on smart grids, to process them and to make them usable for policy makers and stakeholders.

IEA ISGAN Working Group 6 Transmission and Distribution Network Systems (working period 2023-2024)

IEA ISGAN Working Group 6 addresses the challenges in the overall system of transmission and distribution networks for electricity. The results will improve the understanding of the impact of smart grid technologies on the overall system performance, transmission capacities and operational management of public electricity supply systems. In the project years 2022-2023, international pilot projects on flexibility use and the necessary interaction of transmission and distribution grid operators will be summarised and conclusions drawn.

IEA ISGAN Working Group 7: Smart grids transitions of the institutional change (Working period 2023-2026)

The aim of ISGAN Working Group 7 is to bundle international experiences and interdisciplinary research activities on smart grids, process them and make them usable for policy makers and regulators. These include social, economic and humanities research on the institutional framework conditions of the transition, in particular on governance issues, as well as the development of processes for the broad participation of relevant social groups in smart grid transition processes.

IEA ISGAN Working Group 9: Flexibility Markets - Development and Implementation (Working Period 2021 - 2023)

ISGAN Working Group 9 focuses on flexibilities in the power system and related market mechanisms. Main work areas include the integration of trading with flexibilities (redispatch), investigation of the needs of different market participants, identification and definition of flexibilities and their characteristics, development and scaling of interoperable flexibility markets, consumer-oriented understanding of flexibilities, and the avoidance of stability or security losses due to diversity loss.

The International Smart Grid Action Network (ISGAN) aims in enhancing the knowledge about Smart Grid Technologies and accelerating the development and the international deployment. The main objective of the Austrian contribution in IEA ISGAN Annex 6 is to build up knowledge and long term concepts for the development of an intelligent and integrated electricity system, with the focus on the interaction of distribution and transmission networks, including the lead of the related subtask within the Annex.

IEA SHC Task 59/EBC Annex 76: Deep Renovation of Historic Buildings - Towards lowest possible energy demand and CO2 emission (nZEB)

The goal of Task 59 was to document international best practice examples (knowledge base), develop a multidisciplinary planning process, and develop holistic retrofit solutions for historic buildings. As a knowledge base, the Historic Building Retrofit Atlas (www.HiBERatlas.com) emerged from the project. In the HiBERatlas more than 55 best practice examples are documented. In addition to the management of Subtask A (Knowledge Base) and Subtask C (Conservation compatible retrofit solutions & strategies), innovative technical and organizational retrofit solutions, which have already been applied in national demonstration projects and tested in practice, have been incorporated and further developed through the Austrian participation.

IEA SHC Task 61/EBC Annex 77: Integrated Solutions for Daylighting and Electric Lighting

Lighting accounts for around 15% of global electricity consumption - intelligent coordination of daylighting and electric lighting solutions together with integral lighting controls enable significant energy savings. At the same time, the solutions must be optimally planned in a user-centered approach based on the visual and non-visual effects of light. The task analysed user requirements as well as existing technologies and design methods and documented exemplary implementations in case studies.

IEA TCP AFC Annex 33: Fuel Cells for Stationary Applications (Working period 2022 - 2024)

The task focus is on the analyses of decentralized hydrogen concepts in climate-neutral neighborhoods or renewable energy communities. Based on decentralized hydrogen energy concepts and in combination with electrolysers and hydrogen storage systems, stationary fuel cells will improve self-consumption rates of the renewable energy sources produced on site. Furthermore, the grid consumption of electrical energy will be reduced and the resilience of the energy system will be increased.

IEA UsersTCP Empowering all: Gender in policy and implementation for achieving transitions to sustainable energy (Working period 2022-2024)

Previous work in the Task suggests that countries with higher income levels pay little attention to inclusive energy (-technology) use and its implications. Therefore, this project focuses on obtaining more data on the gender aspects of energy users through a survey, developing guidelines on inclusive technology development, and communicating the overall research results with interested stakeholders.

The energy transition is critical in solving the climate crisis. Automated demand side management has great potential in this process but struggles with social acceptance. In SLA2.0, the role of gender and diversity factors will be investigated with regards to flexibility and engagement and the contribution potential of energy communities to a social license to automate will be explored. Results will provide guidance for flexibility profile identification and stakeholder-specific recommendations.

Automation applications for load shifting, also in the homes of end customers, will play an important role in the current transformation process of the energy system. The project “Social License to Automate” examined the question, which aspects are important for the success of these innovations and technologies, and under which circumstances end users are prepared to accept or reject energy-related automation processes.

The goal of the Annex Electric Motor Systems is to raise awareness on the large savings potential in motor systems, while showing the realization method of such a path. Currently, Austria leads the task Energy Audits for Motor Systems to develop recommendations for carrying out energy audits for motor systems based on international standards.

IEA-DHC Annex TS2: Implementation of Low Temperature District Heating Systems

The potential of alternative heat sources is highest at low system temperatures, but current district heating networks are usually high-temperature systems. The aim of the IEA DHC Annex TS2 is to support the transformation of district heating networks towards lower temperatures (the so-called 4th generation). For this purpose, Annex TS2 forms an international platform that enables an exchange on the topics of technology, system, demonstration and competitiveness.

IEA-IETS Annex 15: Industrial Excess Heat Recover (Phase 2)

In the framework of IEA IETS Annex 15 potentials of excess heat and technologies for their integration were collected from national research projects, bundled and elaborated on. This way, a broad knowledge base was built on experience gained in carrying out surveys for potential use of excess heat. Experiences with questionnaires, process integration tools and extrapolation of data using existing knowledge about the respective energy systems were exchanged. A process database with detailed process information could also be established, which can be used for further research activities. Also, in the area of policy instruments, recommendations for future measures to increase the use of surplus heat were derived on the basis of national contributions.

The electrification of industry can make a major contribution to CO2 reduction. The aim of the task was a transfer of knowledge between the international and the state levels. Nationally, the aim was to spread and establish the topic of “electrification of industry” through stakeholder involvement. A comparison of electrification based on roadmaps and resources was carried out and, above all, systemic aspects of electrification of industry were analysed.
