The application of innovative technologies means additional planning and coordination effort which usually cannot be incorporated into the conventional planning processes of the BIG. To overcome these barriers for the application of innovative technologies, the sub project at hand aims at preparing information, feasibility studies, planning records, experiences and practical examples in a way, that they can be implemented directly into the planning process.
RENEW SCHOOL Austria: Examples and financing models for school renovations
The project aimed at learning from 14 Austrian school buildings, from their financial and cooperation models, meaning successful cooperation between involved parties. The success factors have been derived from these projects and together with 10 best practice schools been published in a brochure. The project supported the Austrian activities in the IEE EU-Projekt RENEW SCHOOL (www.renew-school.eu).
BIGMODERN - Subproject 2: Demonstration project of an official building in Bruck
In the frame of this subproject being part of the flagship project BIGMODERN, a decision matrix as well as a handbook for planning, including feasibility analysis and a collection of information, serving as decision guidance for planning and implementation of sustainable building refurbishment, is being developed. In this way, the risk for planners and builders of the usage of new sustainable technologies shall be minimised.
Plus energy office building - Subproject 3: Austria's biggest plus energy office building
In course of the refurbishment of the Vienna University of Technology (Univercity 2015) Austria´s biggest plus energy office building is going to be built. This project intends to demonstrate not only the technical but furthermore the economical feasibility of plus energy office buildings. Within this building the plus energy concept is fulfilled by optimizing the power consumption of the whole building and the installation of Austria´s largest facade integrated photovoltaic plant.
Refurbishment of an existing villa of the "Gründerzeit" to passive house standard with passive and active solar use
The project shows in an exemplary way how buildings of the time of "Gründerzeit" could be maintained and could offer a better environmental balance including the view of the village and the traffic than a new building. As an example a villa has been converted into a multi-family house within a larger housing project.
e80^3-Buildings - Sub project 4: Demonstration object
Alongside the realisation of the plus energy building in Kapfenberg, a demonstration project is scheduled to be created that accomplishes an economically viable and technically innovative solution for the future.
Kierling passive house - heading into the future sustainably
Using the example of demonstrational renovation, Kierling (built between 1977 and 1979) tests the possibilities of a renovation in passive house standard in technical, organizational and financial terms as an outstanding example of a comprehensive renovation.
e80^3-Buildings - "reconstruction concepts towards energy plus house standard with prefabricated active roof and facade elements, integrated home automation and network integration"
The project aims for highly-efficient renovation of existing buildings and settlements in urban areas. The main focus are buildings that were built between 1950 and 1980.
BIGMODERN Subproject 7: Monitoring concept
Development of a pattern for comprehensive documentation of the project results. The concepts contain amongst others monitoring of energy consumption, resources, costs, functionality and comfort, etc.

In the frame of the flagship project BIGMODERN the "Amtshaus Bruck an der Mur" had been renovated according to above-average quality standards concerning energy efficiency and sustainability while complying with an industrial management point of view.
SPACE4free - Retrofitting souterrain areas in 19th century townhouses to apartments with high quality of life and low energy consumption
Planning of durable and damage-free apartments with high quality of life and low energy consumption in moisture exposed souterrain areas of 19th century townhouses. Using innovative ventilation control systems comfortable room climate will be created. Additionally the tolerance of different types of use is ensured. A planning tool enables the scaling of the findings and thus the applicability to various planning situations.
BIGMODERN - Subproject 10: Evaluation, Documentation and Ensuring Transferability
The subproject 10 is part of the flagship project BIGMODERN. It is based on the results of subproject SP 7 in which a monitoring concept has been developed. This concept is now implemented through monitoring of different aspects occurring during the first two years of operation of both BIGMODERN demonstration buildings.
