IEA District Heating and Cooling (DHC TCP)
The TCP on District Heating and Cooling (DHC) was founded in 1983. It deals with the design, performance and operation of DHC and Combined Heat and Power systems as powerful tools for energy conservation and the reduction of environmental impacts of supplying heat.
IEA HPT Task 41: Cold Climate Heat Pumps
The aim was to increase the efficiency of outdoor air heat pumps in cold climates in locations with low outside temperatures of up to -25°C. Newly developed heat exchanger concepts were tested and optimized regarding their icing behaviour. Different circuit modifications were modelled and simulation studies for low ambient temperatures were carried out.
Digital Twin of a Dynamic Hardware Emulator: Challenges and Opportunities
6. December 2022
Online, AT
To meet the new challenges and maintain the reliability of the electrical grid with increasing share of static generation, innovative solutions are required. This lecture will present digital twin development challenges and opportunities of a dynamic hardware emulator that can be used for controller hardware in the loop (CHIL) testing.
IEA HPT Annex 57: Showing flexibility benefits through heat pump implementation in multi-vector energy systems and thermal networks
This project analyzes the future implementation of heat pumps in multi-vector energy systems and thermal networks. This is intended to increase flexibility and to use it for various applications, e.g. for system services or to participate in different electricity markets. Using international case studies, influencing factors and potentials for flexibility options will be evaluated and suitable business models will be derived.
IEA HPP Annex 47: Heat Pumps in District Heating and Cooling Systems
A significant use of alternative heat sources with the help of district heating and cooling networks is a major challenge for a sustainable energy supply. In times of increasing shares of fluctuating producers such as PV and wind energy, the relevance of heat pumps increases. Within the framework of the IEA HPT Annex 47, potentials and barriers for the integration of heat pumps in DHC networks were analyzed.
IEA HPT Annex 54: Heat pump systems with low GWP refrigerants
The aim of the project was to investigate the current situation in the area of refrigerants with a low global warming potential ("low-GWP"). The focus of the national project lies on the current refrigerant application situation and on an outlook until 2030 on the availability of components and systems.
IEA-ISGAN Annex 1: Global Smart Grid Inventory IEA-ISGAN and Annex 2: Smart Grid Case Studies
The international Smart Grid Action Network (ISGAN) aims to improve the understanding of Smart-Grid-technologies and to accelerate global deployment. The work in ISGAN is structured in eight standing working groups (annexes). The present project describes the Austrian contribution to Annex 1: Smart Grids Inventory and Annex 2: Smart Grids Case Studies.
IEA EBC Annex 71: Building Energy Performance Assessment Based on In-situ Measurements
The requirements on building envelope and on building technology are steadily increasing. There is a lack of measurement and analysis methods to control the quality of the built implementation and to optimize the building operation. This project developed a methodological basis to enable an in-situ evaluation of the actual energy performance and building operation. For this purpose, it investigated methods to generate data-driven building models favouring the use of already available on-board data.
IEA SHC Task 61/EBC Annex 77: Integrated Solutions for Daylighting and Electric Lighting
Lighting accounts for around 15% of global electricity consumption - intelligent coordination of daylighting and electric lighting solutions together with integral lighting controls enable significant energy savings. At the same time, the solutions must be optimally planned in a user-centered approach based on the visual and non-visual effects of light. The task analysed user requirements as well as existing technologies and design methods and documented exemplary implementations in case studies.
IEA ES Annex 39: Large Thermal Energy Storages for District Heating
Large-scale heat storage systems will play a central role in increasing the necessary flexibility of district heating networks and enable the further expansion of renewable energies. The main objective of Task 39 was to determine the aspects that are important in planning, decision-making and implementing large thermal energy storages for integration into district heating systems and for industrial processes, given the boundary conditions for different locations and different system configurations.
IEA ES Task 46: Application-oriented energy storage selection
Up to now, the energy system has been thought primarily in terms of supply – for example, through the expansion of wind or PV plants. In the future, however, planning must be based more on demand: How much energy is needed when, in what form, and with what system relevance – and which storage solutions can provide this as efficiently as possible? The goal is to develop a well-founded, practice-oriented “match-making matrix” for selecting the most suitable energy storage technology (electrical, chemical, thermal) for specific applications.
IEA ISGAN Annex 7 - Webinar: A Nordic carbon-neutral energy system enabled by flexibility and storage
30. June 2020
Online
This webinar discusses the flexibility measures enabled by smart grids and sector coupling that can help countries and regions make the deep decarbonisation of their energy systems a reality. It will discuss some of the opportunities and challenges of balancing energy and power in a larger perspective and in some local perspectives in the Nordic countries.
IEA Energy Efficient End-use Equipment (4E)
The activities of IEA 4E TCP are carried out in four platforms and joint ExCo projects. The active Platforms are: Electric Motor Systems (EMSA), Sustainable Lighting and Controls (SSL), Efficient, Demand Flexible Networked Appliances (EDNA) and Power Electronic Conversion Technology (PECTA).
IEA HPT Annex 61: Heat Pumps in Positive Energy Districts
IEA HPT Annex 61 evaluated the role of heat pumps (HP) in positive energy districts (PED). Efficiency potentials of the electric and thermal energy of districts that can be unlocked with the use of HPs were evaluated in order to reach a positive energy balance. This referred to both, upgrade of waste heat and simultaneous generation of different energy use in buildings (space heating, DHW, space cooling/dehumidification) and included self-consumption of on-site renewable electricity generation.
