The construction sector faces growing challenges in meeting sustainability requirements, particularly during early project phases where key decisions on materials, construction methods, and energy concepts are made. This project aims to leverage AI and BIM to optimize sustainability assessments by providing precise CO₂ balance forecasts and material suggestions. The innovative approach reduces manual effort and supports the implementation of climate-neutral construction, contributing significantly to Austria’s climate goals.
Circular Bio Floor- Floor construction made from biomaterials
In this project biogenic building materials from wood industry waste and geopolymer binders are developed that can be used as tamped fill or 3D-printed dry-screed elements in timber construction. These materials offer functional benefits and an excellent eco-balance, contribute to the conservation of forests and enable the production of separable and reusable floor segment panels using digital manufacturing technologies. That significantly reduces the consumption of primary raw materials.
m-hub - a web-based data hub for collection and query of material compositions of the building stock of the City of Vienna

NEB-Tischlerei-Melk - Development of a former joinery site into a multipliable European lighthouse NEB neighbourhood
The former production site of the Fürst Möbel GmbH shall be transformed into a climate-neutral, multifunctional, scalable mixed-use NEB city quarter. This quarter called “Tischlerei Melk” is intended to achieve the highest ambition levels of the NEB compass and to position and represent Austria strongly in this context. As the area is located next to the world-famous Abbey of Melk, the project has the potential to become an internationally known best-practice solution.
Heat islands Feldbach - Synergetic measures against overheating and heavy rain in preparation for an R&D&I project in Feldbach
Analysis and evaluation of the effects and cost-benefit ratios of synergetic measures with regard to overheating and heavy rain in cities. Based on this, an implementation plan will be developed for a subsequent demonstration in Feldbach, which can be used in many similar cities.

PDCA4Future - Feasibility Study for a Climate-Resilient Urban District in Bruck an der Mur through a New Planning and Financing Approach
Using the Hannes-Bammer-Sports Hall as a case study, the PDCA4Future feasibility project in Bruck an der Mur aims to develop an innovative planning and assessment tool. This involves creating renovation and financing models that align climate neutrality goals with sustainable urban planning. The objective is a fact-based and replicable investment decision (renovation vs. new construction).
IMPACT – Hybrid hydraulic and electric charging of stratified compact hot water
The IMPACT project is developing an innovative decentralised hot water storage technology for large-volume urban housing. Thanks to a novel, flat design, the system enables highly efficient utilisation of renewable energy sources such as heat pumps and photovoltaics. The aim is to create a cost-efficient, sustainable solution for decarbonising water heating that is optimised using intelligent energy management and machine learning methods.
DigiHemp/ Digital technologies for quality assurance and performance enhancement of hemp-based building materials
Development of digital methods for describing, predicting and optimizing the thermal/mechanical properties of composite materials made from bio-based raw materials. Taking into account the complex material morphology as well as the properties of the components for the prediction of building material properties, the overall goal of increasing the use of bio-based building materials shall be achieved.
V-Form – Manufacturing unreinforced vaulted concrete floors with variable pneumatic formworks
V-Form is working on the development of vaulted concrete floors in terms of structural design and building physics, as well as on a new formwork system. Thanks to the efficient shell construction, around 70% CO2eq-emissions can be saved compared to reinforced concrete flat slabs. The reusable and variable pneumatic formwork system aims to enable the economical production of the double-curved concrete shells.
InSite - Monitoring and evaluation of innovative demonstration buildings
In the "Stadt der Zukunft" and "Smart City Initiative" programmes, a large number of demonstration projects have been implemented in recent years. To be able to evaluate the developed innovations in a uniform and comparable form and to make the knowledge gained accessible to implementers, InSite subjects 10 selected objects from these programmes to energy and ecological monitoring as well as sociological surveys over a period of 24 months. The interpreted results are publicly available as a published study and as an interactive online platform.
VisErgyControl - Integral control system for daylight and artificial lighting for high visual and melanopic comfort with minimized primary energy consumption
Within the project VisErgyControl an integral, simulation-based, energy-efficient open loop daylight and artificial lighting control system had been developed. The research project focuses on the visual and melanopic requirements of users while minimizing the energy consumption for heating and cooling.
PEQBacker: Integrated District Planning - Enabler on the way to a Plus-Energy District
Development of guidelines for the implementation of Plus-Energy District coordination units based on research of success factors, exploration of mission elements of existing structures and consultation of a broad stakeholder group with the goal of increasing the transformation of existing and emerging neighbourhoods toward Plus-Energy Districts.
TEA-PUMP – Techno-economic Analysis of Thermoelectric Modules for Efficiency and Performance Enhancement in Heat Pumps for Residential Buildings
The TEA-Pump project explores the innovative use of thermoelectric elements (TEM) in compression heat pumps to enhance their efficiency and performance. Through a comprehensive techno-economic analysis, promising heat pump (HP) configurations for use in urban multi-family housing are identified. The project makes a significant contribution to the decarbonization of heating and cooling supply and supports the development of climate-neutral cities through energy-efficient, future-oriented heat pump technologies.
