NaKaReMa - Improving the sustainability of cable sheathing through regional, bio-based and recycled materials

The NaKaReMa project takes a holistic approach to cable sheathing for automotive applications and their improvement in terms of sustainability. To this end, various approaches are being investigated - both regional raw material sources to reduce transport routes and bio-based raw materials to reduce dependence on crude oil. The use of recyclates from cable sheathing to close the cycle through recycling is also being investigated.

High-quality refurbishment - Designing quality standards for the refurbishment of municipal buildings

Designing quality standards for ecological refurbishment (based on E. Panzhauser's proposals, 2001); applying them to characteristic types of buildings systematically selected in diverse municipalities; the achieved results shall serve as good practice examples for future refurbishment and as basis of discussion on subsidy regulations.

"gugler! build & print triple zero" - subproject 2: building with recycros

Building with recycros is working out basics in order to close the cycle of materials in the building sector as well as to increase the usage of recycled materials (recycros). The existing material cycles in the building sector are going to be analysed. Furthermore, there will be a catalogue presented, covering the actual situation of which materials are used in today´s engineering and how the waste is treated. The project will be completed with a summary of results and a proposal of concrete materials and constructional systems for the building project gugler.

The Sustainable Hospital

Working together with practitioners scientists from the fields of social ecology, sociology of health and economics introduce the concept of sustainable development into a pilot hospital. The feasibility study establishes the base for ecological, social and economic improvements within the hospital.

Development of a Cost-Benefit-Tool: costs and benefits of energy efficient and ecologic buildings

Development of a cost-benefit-tool which reaches beyond a pure cost approach and also recognizes the benefits of a building for its inhabitants and users. The inclusion of benefits is based on existing evaluation systems, especially on the Austrian building evaluation system TQB - Total Quality Building, which has been revised in 2009.

IEA Bioenergy Task 40: Deployment of biobased value chains (Working period 2022 - 2024)

Bioenergy Task 40 traditionally focused on international trade and supply chains of biomass for bioenergy. Starting in 2018, the systems view was broadened, also to better meet Austrian requirements. The supply chain focus was maintained, but with a broader premise: The establishment of bio-based value chains for a sustainable and fair bioeconomy.

The aim of the flagship project is a new dimension of sustainability (cradle to cradle, ecoeffective zero energy enterprise) for business operation and building, which means zero emission, zero energy, zero waste. This will be shown on the basis of a beacon of innovation: Gugler GmbH, a modern sustainable media services enterprise (traditional print and new media) will extend their current building from about 2100 square meters and about 90 employees to about 5,000 square meters.

The research project examined different forms of communal living of elderly people and contributes to the development of new, common forms of living for the elderly. Questions concerning demographic change and economic as well as ecologic challenges of our time had been dealt with.
